Please pray for me. I am retiring in a few months and cannot seem to discern what the Lord wants for me. I am also so unsure of where I am at. My work load is thinning out and I feel that I have no purpose and that I am not useful.

Go to your parish and get involved. St. Vincent de Paul…if they don’t have one start one. Legion of Mary…if they don’t have one start one. Take Communion to the sick and infirmed. Start a Catholic Bible study. Help out with adult Faith formation or RCIA. Start a prayer group.

You are in my prayers.

Don’t worry to much,While you worry yourself God has already prepared your new path,
Follow the Breadcrumbs of Blessings, and you will be fine,
Fear of the unknown can seem difficult to handle

Praying for you. Both my parents are retired, so I know what it’s like. 🙂

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may god rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Mental Peace

O Lady of Mental Peace,
Mother of Tranquility
and Mother of Hope,
look upon oldfatguy in this time
of weakness and unrest.

Teach her searching heart
to know that God’s Love
for her is unchanging and
unchangeable, and, that
true human love can only
begin and grow by touching
His Love.

Let your gentle Peace -
which this world cannot give
  • be always with her.
And, help her to bring this
    same Peace into the lives
    of others.
Our Lady of Mental Peace,
  • Pray for us!
    Amen.
Jesus, Help Me!

In every need let me come to You with humble trust,
saying:
Jesus, help me!
In all my doubts, perplexities, and temptations:
Jesus, help me!
In hours of loneliness, weariness and trials:
Jesus, help me!
In the failure of my plans and hopes, in disappointments,
troubles and sorrows:
Jesus, help me!
When others fail me, and Your Grace alone can assist me:
Jesus, help me!
When I throw myself on Your tender Love as Savior:
Jesus, help me!
When my heart is cast down by failure, at seeing no good
come from my efforts:
Jesus, help me!
When I feel impatient, and my cross irritates me:
Jesus, help me!
When I am ill, and my head and hands cannot work and
I am lonely:
Jesus, help me!

Always, always, in spite of weakness, falls and short-
comings of every kind:
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, help me and never forsake me!

Amen

Prayers said for your intention. Good luck on your journey.

Perhaps favourite old hobbies are your calling to return to.

I have branched out into history, linguistics and science that fascinated me vaguely when younger but which I didn’t have a proper chance to get into because exams and then a career loomed.

For some people it is interacting with plants or animals, or crafts. Cookery echoes the hand of the Great Cook.

Mathematics are everywhere in the universe and are eloquent about God’s works.

All these things are fabulous talking points and very near to the “spiritual” realm and should dovetail well with things listed by Johnnyc76.

Our Father said.

Congratulations on your retirement! Enjoy it!! I will be praying for you!
I like the the suggestions about joining church ministries and revisiting old hobbies! If you are a person who feels working gives you a sense of purpose, you may consider working part time.
The thing you MUST do is fill at least some of the hours you used spend working doing something good! 🙂 Nothing worse than having TOO much time to sit and think! Remember, you DO have purpose and you ARE useful!! God bless you!
You do have purpose and you are useful!

Praying to the Holy Spirit to give you guidance, direction, strength, fortitude & wisdom in your life’s choices.

Might help if you wrote a Bucket List. Think of the things you want to do, places you want to see etc.

Take your time. Don’t make any major decisions like selling the house until you look at your finances and then decide. But you should start cleaning out the attic and basement.

You are probably use to functioning within a daily schedule. Now make a new one. You have the time for morning Mass, workout at the gym, play cards or learn a game, donate your work attire, check out travel brochures, have lunch, have people over for dinner.

Many find themselves so busy after retirement, they wonder how they did it when working.

One of the things I have found interesting is to visit map sites on line.

There are a LOT of things within driving distance that I had NO IDEA existed.

So I “tour” around by looking at satellite imagery and then we plan day trips.

Doesn’t take much money and I get to learn a lot.

Our parish church plans bus trips. For example, there is a traveling “Shroud of Turin” exhibit. It has “relic” status by having been touched to the original Shroud of Turin. I’ve bought a bunch of books on the Shroud of Turin, as well.

Now I have the time to pursue studying these sorts of things … that I just did not have the time to explore when I was working.

I really despise, loathe, hate change. Retiring is a change of gears, so to speak. What I have right now at nearly 70 is a part-time job, care of grandchildren from time to time, and some volunteer activities (that are getting entirely out of hand; I need to do some pruning.) I also have more time to read, visit with friends, and attend to the spiritual life. When you retire, take a deep breath and look around. Ask God to help you see what to do next. Then look around again. Things will open up, just maybe not the day after you retire–or then again they might. 😉

Praying for you. I’ve been retired for 24 years and love it. I did a lot of volunteer work to fill time and enjoyed it.

I know this is an older thread, but I wanted to make a suggestion: The Knights of Columbus can always use volunteers.

Also, don’t forget to enjoy your retirement with recreation!
