see Africa: The Continent of Catholic Hope| National Catholic Register

"The world looks to Africa as the continent of hope,” the Pope said.

At the start of the 20th century, there were barely 2 million Catholics on the continent, and most were Europeans who belonged to colonial powers that controlled almost all of Africa. Today, there are more than 230 million Catholics, almost all of them native Africans.

According to a study by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, since 1980, the Catholic population has risen by 238%, the largest growth anywhere in the world.

Could be, but things seem to have been getting off to a running start when Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre was the Apostolic Delegate to French West Africa and Archbishop of Dakar.

The martyrdom of the Uganda men in the 1800s started the Catholic Church in a big way in Africa.
