salaam to all.

Is there a difference among Christians what happens after death. What happens to a non-christian after he/she dies. Where does the soul go. Also, when the person dies, is he able to hear and listen to those who visit his grave site.

Muslims believe in a Day of Judgment where every soul will be resurrected for the final accounting in God’s court. Do Christians believe in this also?

If Christians believe in a Judgment, what sort of things will we be judged on?

For those who go to Hell, do they stay there forever or do can they get out after a period of time? If they get out, do they go to Heaven afterwards or do they go somewhere else?

Do Christians go to Hell, if they believe and accept Jesus as their savior but were bad people then what is their outcome

What happens to the earth afterwards. Is it destroyed or does it continue to sustain life?

In Christianity, there will be a final judgement, where everyone who has ever lived will be raised from the dead and be judged according to their conduct in this life, how we treated others and how we served God… Those who were evil go to Hell, and those who were good go To Heaven. In Catholicism, even those who are Chrisitan can go to Hell, if the lived a life of sin and were never sorry. And like wise someone who is not Christian, and never had the truth revealed to them can still be saved if they lived a good life and served God in the way they believed to be correct. After the final Judgement, the Earth will be no more, and there will only be Heaven and Hell, both lasting forever, and no, you cannot get out of Hell once you are there. However Catholics believe in purgatory, its a state of purification for good people who died, but were not yet perfect. Purgatory is like a cleansing before you enter Heaven, and only those who are going to Heaven are in it.
 
Does a person go to Purgatory right after death if he is good but not quiet there yet?
 
Directly after death, a person knows their destiny, heaven or hell, but some people may need some purification, before entering heaven. but only God is judge so we cannot say who is in Hell and who is in purgatory, But those who did not live a life of sin, but were not as holy as can be, may need clean themselves up a bit before entering Heaven. Heres a saying I once heard, the lowest person in purgatory is closer to God and more better off than the holiest person on earth, because you are guaranteed heaven and you cannot fall away.

They stay there until all their sins have been expiated. Some people will stay longer than others depending on how much expiation they need. Nothing that is unclean can enter heaven without being purged first. Those “poor souls” as we call them, can also be aided by the prayers of the living and above all the Eucharistic sacrifice “so that thus purified they may attain the beatific vision of God”.

The catechism also states:

1058 The Church prays that no one should be lost: “Lord, let me never be parted from you.” If it is true that no one can save himself, it is also true that God “desires all men to be saved” (1 Tim 2:4), and that for him “all things are possible”. (Mt. 19:26)

After death?

What of before we were conceived? The idea that it can’t, just cannot be possible that nothing happens after death, according to the majority of human kind, brings this question to the table. Perhaps this question is just as important as wondering where we are going.

If it is this certainty that leads us to assume there must be life after death for our souls, what leads us to believe there wasn’t life before this one? Is it impossible not to exist in any form?

We were, according to scripture, created in our mother’s womb…our immortal soul was created by God specifically for us and infused at our conception…unless you’re a Mormon, in which case they believe our souls existed in heaven before our birth.
is there scriptual support for purgatory.

Immortal suggests that the soul always existed, for it was never “dead” (in this case related to a nonsensical word - nothingness) . There was no beginning and there is no end for God, is this not the same concept?
 
Each soul is uniquely created by God at conception.

At death there is a “particular” judgement. Each soul is judged at death and “goes” either to the intermediate heaven or hell. Purgatory is part of the intermediate heaven. Why intermediate?

The “new heavens and new earth” will not be until the end of “time”. Plus, our bodily resurrection won’t take place until the “general judgement” at the end of time. I think that at the general judgement, purgatory closes up shop and we are left with the “new heavens and new earth” for us to experience with our new glorified bodies. So, until the general judgement, those that die are souls without their glorified bodies, unable to fully experience heaven. It is, therefore, somewhat intermediate.

Time itself is a characteristic of this world. God is eternal. Eternity is outside of time yet includes it. So when you ask, how long is Sally going to be “in” purgatory, there is no real answer. It isn’t a question of time.

Actually, immortal means “won’t die” as oppossed to Eternal, which means without beginning or end. Jesus is the Son eternally…our souls, which will never die, are immortal. See the difference?

Dear dmelosi, there are different views on what happens to non-believers after death depending on who you ask.

Below is a brief answer
  1. Those who are termed ‘Jahil-e-Muqassir’ (lit. ‘culpable ignorant’). These are non-believers to whom the message of Islam has reached and who have understood its truthfulness. However, they are not prepared to accept the truth due to their obstinacy and stubbornness. This group deserves to be punished in Hell.
  2. Those who are termed ‘Jahil-e-Qasir’ (lit. ‘inculpable ignorant’). These are non-believers to whom the message of Islam has not reached, or it has been presented to them in a very incomplete and untruthful manner. Such people will attain salvation if they are truthful to their own religion.

  1. Do we know where purgatory takes place, does the soul remain in the grave during purgatory or does it go somewhere else and then return to the grave after wards.

The Church has stated that Purgatory is both a “place” and a “state of being”; aside from this its really left up to our imagination as to exactly where purgatory is.

If someone is assigned to Hell their soul goes directly to Hell after death, it does not remain in the grave. At the Last Judgment they will be united with their body to spend eternity in Hell.

CHALLENGE: Where does the Church ever OFFICIALLY say purgatory is a “place?” The CCC is silent on the issue.

FAM: The catholic church does NOT believe in SOUL sleep…we believe, instead, in the particular and final judgement.

In the particular judgement we find out our individual destination in eternity…in the Final Judgement…God pronounces judgement upon all creation.
