After receiving Communion, does anyone do this?

knelt for communion the other day at my pew, saw a host on the ground under the pew in front of mr.
dont know how it got there, didnt know what to do.
got a priest after mass and he consumed it. wasnt sure if it was consecrated or not.
In the future, feel free to consume it yourself. A little dirt won’t hurt you. I have yet to drop one when I am serving communion, but I was instructed to consume the host if it is dropped.

Sometimes watching people receive communion can be very beautiful to watch and in fact helps me focus more on Jesus. Then again, other times it can be a bit unsettling. I guess I also kind of use it as a prayer aid. We meditate on the mysteries of the rosary to help us pray. I think sometimes the same could be said for watching communion. It can be an amazing thing to watch and can be truly inspiring.

Last year a women in the same pew as me received Holy Communion, came back to the pew took the host out of her mouth and started examining it. By the end of the Mass she still hadn’t consumed it so I asked her for it. I gave it to the priest and explained what had happened. Since then, there are always 2 altar boys or 2 decons standing on either side of the priest as he distributes Communion and they watch carefully that everyone consumes the host before they walk away.

I don’t do it after I’ve received, but I find myself doing it before. Reception in the hand really urks me, and I find myself watching to see how many people receive in that way.

It is most.

start watching each person who receives communion to make sure that they actually consume the host. I
Does anyone else do this?
No, I never do that

In one parish where I was, for about four weeks straight, we would find a host under the kneeler at one of the masses. I put some papers out for the ushers to note who was sitting in that area of church. The people saw the sheets in the back of the church and the word got around about what was to be done with them. We never had another problem.

After receiving communion, I always go back to my pew and try to pray. Sometimes I find myself distracted though, and start watching each person who receives communion to make sure that they actually consume the host. I do this because one time I almost had to get up, because I happened to catch one lady going back to her seat and then consuming the host. Ever since then I have had trouble taking my eye off of those receiving communion because I am worried that one day when no when is watching, someone will try to take the host home or something stupid like that.

Does anyone else do this?
I just close my eyes and recite the Anima Christi. That keeps both my eyes (and nose) out of everyone else’s business.

I usually sit up front and everyone files by right in front of me. I sometimes find myself watching the people come up and receive. I try to avoid this because, as others have pointed out, it is distracting from what I should be doing.

Occasionally I have an uncharitable thought about someone who I think handles the host too casually (almost all hand receivers in my parish, including me) or someone who takes a step before consuming. More often I find myself just thinking about each of them. Some I know, some I don’t. The kids that are growing up each year, etc. Some approach super-reverently, some very nonchalant. We have one young couple that comes up together, side by side. I wonder how long they will keep that up. But they all receive the same Lord – the super-holy lady that sits behind me and the brat that wouldn’t participate when I taught CCD and couldn’t tell transubstantiation from transmission, and the rest in between. Makes me feel good, really. But it is distracting so I try to keep my eyes down and concentrate on my prayers. Obviously I fail at it quite often.

I hear ya, but what about the sacrilege and the disrespect to our Lord? I agree that we should keep our nose out of another’s business, but we should be prepared to protect our Lord in the Eucharist at all costs.

How about this: Priests should administer the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus because God called him to do just that- administer the Sacraments. Rome declared that under extreme circumstances a lay person could administer the Eucharist but I don’t see any extreme circumstances at Mass. That’s why you have an Ordained Priest- to do Priestly things. Seems like the Catholic Priesthood is getting demolished, but I guess that’s just me?

It also seems like most, if not all respondents to this blog have witnessed gross negligence in regard to handling the Eucharist. People walking off with God Almighty in their pocket? It reminds me of the prayer St. Michael taught the children at Fatima…

“Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I adore Thee profoundly and I offer Thee the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, Truly Present in all the tabernacles of the earth, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He Himself is offended. And by the Infinite Merits of His Most Sacred Heart, and of The Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners.”

Virgin of Fatima, pray for us!

I have to agree that EMHC’s should be eliminated. I am an “in the hand” receiver, however I think ideally on the tongue by a priest alone would be the best form for the sacrament. It would help it retain the meaning it should always have.

On another note, but speaking of communion, one time when I went up to receive the EMHC gave me 2 hosts stuck together and they came apart when placed in my hand. I realized it and did what automatically came to my mind to do: I gave it back. Now I realize that I should have just taken both of them, but I didn’t know what to do. I felt like an idiot afterwards and wondered what the people standing in line must have thought. I never found out what he did with the additional host.🤷

I sometimes watch a few of the people as they receive Our Lord, but as a daily communicant the Communion line is generally fairly short and comprised of people I’m familiar with (except on Sundays). Usually I go back to my pew, kneel, and pray the anima Christi first for myself, then for any close friends who happen to be at that particular Mass, then for all receiving at that Mass, then for all who have received in that particular church earlier that day (if applicable), then for all who have received in the diocese, and then for all who have received in the world.

I have seriously considered joining the Byzantine Catholic Church. Their reverence for the sacrament is tremendous - and they are united with the Pope.

The lack of reverence during Communion and any other part
of the Mass makes me very sad.

Any Latin Mass would also work, if you haven’t already thought about that. Each recipient kneels before the Almighty, receives the Eucharist on the tongue and it given It by a Priest, so there is no room for negligence and much room for Adoration. Just a thought.

I have gone to a Byzantine Liturgy a few times and it was a different. Also, the Church was absolutely amazing. Pretty cool.

Yes, any Latin Mass will also work, but it has bothered me for the longest time about the lack of reverence surrounding the the whole liturgy. Yes, and the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine rite IS amazing!

Do I understand that correctly? A lack of reverence in the Latin Mass? I know it’s not a clown mass or even an ecumenical gathering but a lack of reverence? I’m not sure what you’ve been attending but I suppose it’s possible for a priest to even botch “the Mass of all time” I guess. Wow. That is really too bad.

Everyone faces God singing great ancient music in a universal language. I think you may need a different priest.

It’s obvious you don’t “get it” and I doubt that you ever will. 🤷

After receiving Holy Communion, you should close your eyes and reflect on the gift you have receive. With your eyes closed, stay focused on the presence of Jesus, who is within you. Don’t open your eyes until you no longer hear people walking back to their seats.

Don’t worry about what others do. God, being omnipotent, really doesn’t need you to police others at Holy Communion.
