After Reposition

I’m the Altar Server Coordinator at my parish. We are going to be doing Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in conjunction with the Way of the Cross on Friday’s during lent. The format of the service is pretty much set in accordance with the guidelines for our diocese.

Father and I have been discussing the best way to end the service. The books I’ve looked at are a bit vague about it. We will have a Presider (Priest or Deacon) with two servers (Cross Bearer and Thurifer). The entire service will be solemn and dignified and I’d like to end it the same way but not too abruptly.

How do you conclude the service after Reposition of the Host? A simple bow before the Altar then recess quietly, a closing prayer then recess, a hymn while recessing. I’d be interested to hear what others are doing.

Often the Divine Praises are prayed during reposition. After that, either reverent silence (if people will be staying in adoration after reposition) or a hymn such as “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name” could work. I have usually seen the latter.

Holy Communion and the Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass has:

“100. After the blessing the priest or deacon who gave the blessing, or another priest or deacon, replaces the blessed sacrament in the tabernacle and genuflects. Meanwhile the people may sing or say and acclamation, and the minister then leaves.”

Ceremonial of Bishops, n. 114, has a similar description, with the bishop kneeling before the altar, while the deacon puts the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. Then:
“Meanwhile, the people may sing or recite an acclamation. [footnote 401 See HCWE, n. 100].
The return to the vesting room (sacristy) takes place in the usual way.”

So for the bishop, I would expect a procession with altar servers, deacon and the bishop, similar to the end of Mass. So I would expect the same sort of procession with a priest presiding.

During lent in our parish we exit silently… no music

Sixty years ago we always recessed to Holy God, We Praise Thy Name. I still have have to suppress the urge to genuflect and turn when we reach the appropriate phrase.

This is exactly what we do, too: Divine Praises during reposition, then the priest recesses while we sing “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name.” However, during Lent, maybe recessing in silence would be preferable.

as above, also generally afterward the priest and others leave quietly through the sacristy not in a procession. the servers put out the candles, put things away etc. as usual
