It reminds me to pray for my country so I don’t mind it.

I understand the complaints but it only happens 4 or 5 times a year so if it bothers you, your pain is short lived.

What about people who aren’t from this country? But who are Catholics? It is One Holy Catholic and Apostolic, not one National Church.
I do not think anyone every said it was. There is nothing uncharitable in not liking the music, but I think that there is no need to imply the priest at this parish or anyone here was promoting a National Church. If you did not mean to suggest this, then this sentence is a strawman, arguing something that does not exist.

I am glad you have your priorities straight. I would think it best to think the best of others. As for those in America (I assume the parish who had this song was here) bur are from other places, I do not think it an insult to them to suggest they support their host country in prayer.

At least you guys didn’t sing “Blame Canada”!

It is Canada’s birthday today:thumbsup:

As a recessional? Sure, that seems fine (we sang Oh Canada this weekend too since today’s Canada Day). Recessional is after Mass anyways.

For after communion? Inappropriate. If there is to be an after communion hymn/song/chant, it should be a meditation on just having received Jesus, not on patriotism. Receiving Holy Communion is the antithesis of the nationalism that song expresses because we all receive the same Jesus in the US, Canada, Germany, or China or at a Roman Catholic or Byzantine Liturgy; it is an expression of our innate universality that transgresses ethnicity, nationality, or any other labels (jocks, geeks, hipsters, etc).
Thank you. You understand the problem perfectly. I am NOT an American receiving Communion, I am a Catholic. The American aspect may or may not intersect with my Catholicism. In fact at this moment, I am choosing to be more of a Catholic than an American, since my own government is acting against my Church’s beliefs and thus, against me as a Catholic. I am being persecuted and it may come down to a stand against my government. I choose my Lord and Savior and my Church!

In many ways Catholics are “strangers in a strange land” called to build the Kingdom of Heaven.

Today, the Cantor was on vacation at the OF mass I go to. Thus we had two options: Process and Recess in silence, which tends to be a bit awkward since the altar servers usually do so with the song. OR what I suggested to Father before mass. I suggested Immaculate Mary as a Processional and God Bless America as the Recessional. I saw nothing wrong with it. The 8:00 Mass is also very popular amongst the local Knights of Columbus and being in a predominantly White american town, I had no concern of offending those that may be against the recessional because they weren’t American. We are still to be loyal to our country.

In the words of Archbishop Lori, “We must be loyal Americans by being bold and courageous Catholics”.

I never saw this day coming, but I choose Jesus Christ and my Church over my nation. This is my temporary home anyway. Even 5 years ago, I would have seen things differently. But now it’s obvious where my loyalties lie. With life, and the Church.

Personally, I do not stop being an American in the liturgy any more than I stop being a Catholic in the voting booth. My two allegiances are deeply intertwined, with complex interactions. Yes, the care of my soul and spiritual matters take a higher priority than my sense of duty to my country, but I seek to achieve a balance in these things, because I was born here, I live here, and I will die here (unless I find another fiancée in Europe…)

Also, I am proud to be a Knight of Columbus. If you know anything about my Order, you will know that we carefully blend Patriotism (the charism of the Fourth Degree) with the other charisms: Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. We are proud Catholics who also happen to be proud Americans, and we defend both the Holy Father as well as the Constitution and our civil liberties.

So it honestly doesn’t bother me to sing patriotic hymns in the context of the liturgy. I’m not going to draw the pedantic card and say that the recessional isn’t part of Mass anyway - to me, that is a cop-out. Devotional songs such as “God Bless America” or “God of Our Fathers” are appropriate to the liturgy during certain times of the year, and, to me, a good way of giving a nod to an important national holiday without the danger of devoting too much liturgical effort to fervent nationalism.

Furthermore, the bishops, speaking through the USCCB, have designated this time the “Fortnight for Freedom”. It is a very special period of intense prayer, study, catechesis, and public action that all American Catholics should be involved in, for the intention of protecting our religious liberty. The bishops in their wisdom have offered us many materials to further this goal, and my parish has implemented them extensively. We are praying a litany for freedom all day on Tuesdays during Eucharistic Adoration. We have added the St. Michael prayer to the end of Mass. We are using the suggested General Intercessions. All the homilies are focused on catechesis about the important issues facing our nation today. If you stop being an American during Mass and bury your head in the sand, you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Stand up for the good of your country and pray that our leaders will come to realize that Catholics cherish both our citizenship and our immortal souls. Listen to our holy priests and bishops as they instruct us on how to form our conscience about the political issues that press upon us in these days. And then go out and take action for the good of the Church, and the good of the country.
:amen:

We sang “America the Beautiful” during the Recessional in my (Not CAF Approved) parish. 😛

Happy Birthday to all of you Canucks! (Just kidding, I know you don’t like that label!)

🍰👋
I really didn’t notice what they sang at Mass. I was too busy praying for my daughter who just before Mass was taken to the Emergency Room because she was having trouble breathing and my wife had to take care of our granddaughters instead of going with me to Mass. Whether the music was appropriate or not, the readings certainly were specially the Gospel about Jesus touching Jairus" daughter and raising her up because I needed Jesus to touch MY daughter and raise her up as well. He DID. It turned out she had an asthma attack and laryngitis. I only know that our former Bishop preached the homily and that was a real surprise to see him there.👍

I do not have any problem with those songs after the Mass. We had the recessional and after that they played God Bless America.
Considering that today Italy lost to Spain (0-4) in the European Cup I rather feel more American than Italian.😃

I feel your pain. I was out of town this weekend and had to attend Mass at a different parish and they played Battle Hymn of the Republic as the recessional song…

-Paul
Sounds like we were at the same parish.

Well praise God for your daughter’s recovery! That is a blessing!

Italy played a good game against the best team in the world right now. They have nothing to be ashamed of and I was sorry to see some of the players crying afterward. I know the player who was injured and had to leave the field down one man was really sobbing, probably blaming himself which he should not. Spain are unbeatable, everyone sees how good they are, and I love how clean they play. No fouling, no diving, just good solid football.

She was still a little “out of kilter” when she and son-in-law came to get the girls. Hopefully she got some rest and she will be okay tomorrow.:gopray:

The readings were great. I’m so glad your daughter is recovering.👍

In Australia we sing the national anthem as a recessional when one of the two national days (Australia Day, or Anzac Day) fall on a weekday. I don’t recall singing it on a Sunday, but I think it’s possible.

If I was visiting America and went to Mass on a national day then I would have no problem with the congregation singing a national song for the recessional, in fact I’d be glad to be there with them, but I would feel excluded if it were sung after communion. What am I supposed to be thinking and feeling at this time? Also, might some particularly nationalistic people be angry with me for not joining in? If a patriotic song were sung both after communion and as a recessional I would leave the church feeling that I had only barely been in communion with my fellow congregation.

It’s times like this to remember that, just as Sunday Obligation is imposed on travellers, it’s also imposed on the particular Churches to make travellers welcome.

During the universal prayers, right after the Creed we pray for our country and elected leaders all the time. With that in mind I have to ask why is it inappropriate to sing an hymn that praises God and ask for his blessings and grace to be upon our country? It is that kind of thinking that lead to prayer being removed from the class rooms of public schools.

Has nothing to do with prayer in schools. I think having a patriotic song (God Bless America is not a hymn!) during the Eucharist is totally inappropriate, period. OK, I might have to give in on the recessional although I still don’t like it. But the subjects are completely unrelated to school prayer.
