He has started secondary school. He must finish it if he wants to get something. He cannot stop and restart. He would lose all the study years he has already passed.

He is not obligated to stop pursuing what he wants to do, morally speaking.

He is not obligated to do what his parents want for a career, morally speaking.

Legally in your country, I don’t know.

It really sounds like there could be something going on in this situation that you don’t know about.

My friend informed me about his whole situation. I’ve described it in the most complete way.

I’m sure he completely informed you on his side of the situation. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible that there could be more to it. Teenagers have been known to dismiss their parents’ views as irrelevant.

His parents do not owe him more than to keep him housed and fed and clothed until he is 18 if we are going to the letter of the law. Their wealth is theirs, they do not have to support his schooling or following his dreams.

Carpentry is not a “usless work” but a skilled craft. Christ was a carpenter, not to mention that skilled tradespersons will be able to support themselves even in terrible economic times.

Life in a modern world is simply not like that.

Portugal is a modern country. Your friend can go to night school while he works a job to support himself. He can work for a few years and save up his earnings so he can return to university. He could look at study abroad opportunities (I know people who are finishing their Master’s Degree for free by teaching classes at universities abroad).

He doesn’t study at university. He goes at the high school. If he stops going at it, he will not be able to get a better job in the future.
Also Catechism said that parents must not order to a son the job he must do. CCC 2230
