Age in the future 120 Genesis 6:3

In Genesis 6:3 the Lord said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, they will live no more than 120 years.”

Then came the flood that whiped out humanity except for Noah and his family. So now we are in the future.

In Genesis11:10-26 which is the future, we see that humans lived much longer then 120 years. For example, Arphaxad lived to be 438 years old. Shelah lived to be 433 years old. And so on.

Now anything after the flood would be the future, the future generation, the future humans. So why did they live longer than 120 years?
 
Call me a doubting Thomas, but I really don’t think humans lived to be over 400. Most of the OT seems to take a bit of poetic license on such things as science and reason.

Whether science can extend the human life beyond 120, would they really want too? Most of the people I see who are over 100 aren’t in the greatest of shape.

Why does the Flood have to be the marker for what is the Future?

I agree. When I was in R.C.I.A., I had MANY questions like this and a priest explained every question I had. So much of the Old Testament, that is not actual history, is allegory with specific teachings.
For instance, there was not an actual talking snake in the garden of eden as I had believed as a protestant.
The R.C.I.A. I had was the most informative and educational teaching I have ever received. I stayed for almost 3 full years and learned so very much; more than I had ever learned or knew in almost 50 years as a protestant.

Personally, I seriously doubt that there has ever been a time in history when the human species has been able to live past about 80 or 90 on average. Health in general has gotten better over the years and so has life spans.
