I came across a Dominican litany to Our Lady from around 1500 in which she is referred to as Agna Dei at the end. Does anyone know anything about this title?
There seems to be some continuing cross-over between use of the word “agna” from Greek, where it means “pure”, and use of the word “agna” from Latin, where it means “female lamb”.
“Agna Dei” used to describe St. Agnes has had this crossover, resulting in St. Agnes usually being portrayed holding a white lamb.
“Agna Dei” in reference to Mary has also been understood as “little ewe-lamb of God” according to this 1909 book on Christian theology, see page 126.
