Agnus Dei/Lamb of God

Our choir, that I sing with has been informed the the Lamb of God needs to cover the fractioning right and the distribution of consecrated host into the 7 ciboria that are used for the distribution of communion. We sing Lamb of God, Bread of Life, Cup of Hope, Prince of Peace, King of Kings and then back to Lamb of God… Grant Us Peace.

There’s no reason you can’t just sing “Lamb of God” each time.

IT’s true that the Agnus Dei should last as long as necessary, always ending with ‘Grant us peace’, but it’s not right to add the stropes (‘Bread of life’, etc.) that the Mass of Creation has in it. We aren’t allowed to add or substract from the text.

Unfortunately, the USCCB’s latest document on music specifically allows it. Even more unfortunate is that the document doesn’t have Vatican approval.

That is the big problem with the USCCB document. As I read it, the lower authority is contradicting what the supreme authority has said. I suspect that this was the result of a huge lobbying effort made by the NPM association.

Our parish’s children’s choir sings an awfully bad paraphrase of the Agnus Dei by Bernadette Farrell. It goes something like this:

Jesus, Lamb of God, bearer of our sins…make us a sign of your peace.

When I spoke to the Archdiocese of Portland, the homebase of OCP, I was told by their director of worship that this should not be used. In fact, it was supposed to have been moved to the Communion song section. It is not a good song to begin with and manages to dumb down the mystery of the Eucharist. Of course, for OCP that is just par for the course. Look at Bob Hurd’s music.

My quagmire is that when I mentioned this to our music director, she told me that our pastor does not like to mix settings.

Since when does loyalty to a setting come before loyalty to the official texts of the Church? I told the official from the Archdiocese of Portland that OCP needed better quality control.

This is a variation I’ve never heard of for the Agnus Dei. I’m only familiar with “Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world…”
