Hello,
I visited another church within another diocese this weekend.
They sang the Lamb of God: (and if it helps, the tune also)

Agnus Dei (da-da-daaa)
Agnus Dei (da-da-daaa)
You take away (da-da-daaa)
You take away (da-da-daaa)
The sins of the (da-da-daaa)
The sins of the (da-da-daaa)
Wo-oo-ooorld (da-da-daaa)
Wo-oo-ooorld (da-da-daaa)
then it is repeated before the second part

So my question is, the second part, I couldn’t understand the words. I waited until after mass to ask my wife and she didn’t know either: The tune went like
da-da-da-da-da-daaa
da-da-da-da-da-daaa

Does anyone know the words.

Sorry, I have the tune in my head and I can’t get it out, help!

Agnus Dei, qui tolis pecata mundi, miserere nobis

pronounced:

Ahg-noose Day-ee, quee toe-less pe-ka-ta moon-dee, me-se-ray-ray no-beace.

The last verse

Agnus Dei, qui tolis pecata mundi, dona nobis pacem

pronounced

Ahg-noose Day-ee, quee toe-less pe-ka-ta moon-dee, doe-na no-beace pa-chem.

On the other hand, it’s not difficult to sing/chant and can be taught by the cantor before Mass. We use the Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei that I learned as a child during Lent. My oldest son, 26, took it upon himself to learn the Pater Noster.

What you describe reminds me of a version by a man named Matt Maher. You can hear part of it here. Just click on the little play arrow underneath “Listen Now”.

As others have pointed out the da-da-da-da-da-daaa might be “Dona Nobis Pacem” - Grant us Peace. And “Miserere Nobis” is have mercy on us.

Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.

Cheap CD. Recorded back in the 50s. This is what we sang. Not all of it, by any means, but this CD is representative of the Mass before Vatican II. My choir continues the tradition.

I have this CD and can vouch for it. It doesn’t include all of what we sang years ago but it will give you a feel…I don’t know how to explain the difference between the monk’s Gregorian Chant and plainsong.

Female and male we lift our voices united with the voices of our ancestors via the Communion of Saints…Church militant, Church suffering, and Church Triumphant as one.

Are you sure it wasn’t “de-da-deee” instead of “da-de-daaa”?

:rotfl:

On this subject: this was going to be my next change to Mass (using the Agnus Dei). Does anyone know which is the best, most traditional version and where I could find it? I was going to target having it ready by next Lent.

I’m sure it is as we sing it the same way in our parish. 🙂

yeah I think from what you described, it “sounds” like the Matt Maher version. I am kinda…eh…on this version. I heard it used frequently at Lifeteen back when I used to attend regularly. The part where it goes “the wooorld” kinda bugs me. but hey, that’s just me.

Just a question. Why is it pronounced “mise-ray-ray”? Shouldn’t it be more like “mi-se-reh-reh” (e as it bet rather than hey)?

I cringe when I here people pronounce Agnus as “ahg-noose”. My first thought is they must be converts, because I don’t know anyone raised in the Church who says “ahg-noose”. 🙂

Well, I am a convert.

I learned how to pronounce this from the Franciscan nuns where I attend daily Mass.
