Today, I went to a Bible study, and I had to leave early, but I just had the thought to say one thing before I left for people to think about, and that we could talk about later.
I said this: “Pray in agreement with each other and with God, for faith in Christ is full of paradoxes, and Jesus is a sign of contradiction.”
Praying in agreement with each other and Jesus being a sign of contradiction are Biblical references I was making, but I want to know why God would want me to mention paradoxes. Is there any use of the term paradox in the Bible? I know that the Christian faith is full of paradoxes, but I want to understand the role of paradox in Scripture and Church Tradition, and the need to uncover and tackle paradoxes that are presented to us in order to make any progress in the knowledge, love, and service of God. One very useful book I have found is Saint Augustine’s On Christian Instruction or On Christian Doctrine. He talks a lot about paradoxes and contradictions as a device used by God to reveal Himself to us in His actions. First of all, before saying anything, please pray that the Holy Spirit disposes me to understand anything that may be said, and then offer any advice or resources. I mostly want ot understand the role of paradox in God’s revelation, but also agreement in prayer and teaching we do, as well as how to deal with Christ being contradicted.
