Hi everyone-
I attend a protestant bible study on the weekends with some friends of mine. The group knows I am Catholic and they have been very gracious. We usually stick to topics we all agree on. But tonight we were discussing The Virgin Mary.
And the woman who co-runs the study (in a very kind and mostly curious way) asked me to tell everyone what Catholics believe about Mary.
I gave her and the group a very general explanation, but mostly touched on the biggest difference between us and them and that is that, one Mary was conceived without original sin and that two Mary remained a virgin after the birth of Christ. Again, in a very respectful way she asked me if I could show her where we find that in scripture. I was caught off guard. I told her that I wasn’t sure but I would look it up in the Catechism and tell her next weekend.
I was wondering if any of you could help me out with a good way of explaining why we believe those things to protestants. It’s hard for me because they want specific bible verses and I just don’t know if that’s enough of an explanation.
Will I have to explain that we don’t believe in sola scriptura???
What is the best way to respectfully go about this? I don’t want to look stupid and therefore make us Catholics look nutty…
