I tried to make a title that wouldn’t prevent people from asking this question in the future, but would you all suggest some brands of fan for penance rooms? I can handle heat really well but our penance room [edit: I mean a confession room, my mind is not at 100% right now] makes me sweat and hurt for water. So I’m trying to find one that would allow for our parish’s penitents to feel more comfortable. Our priest also prefers the cold (and snow) so no matter what it’s a win-win. I’ve looked up the Dyson bladeless fan but I’m not sold on it just yet. It has to be very quiet while maintaining its power so that people won’t be distracted and still be comfortable.

So please make suggestions. The few people who go to confession here may be super thankful. And maybe other people will find this thread and want to do the same.

Sorry to ask a draft question, but what is a penance room? It sounds like something that’s supposed to be uncomfortable!

It’s a confessional. Except it’s a room. Churches tend to be built with rooms now rather than confessionals. The door will have glass in it and the room can be multi-purpose when confessions aren’t happening.

Also allows the church to more easily sell the building to a non-Catholic group if they ever need to. Extra room could be an office, or library, or prayer room, or kiddie play room etc.

Thanks. I couldn’t Google it because there’s a novel called The Penance Room. It sounded like a room where people go to perform a penance, which I’d not heard of before. Is “penance room” the usual term? I just think of them as confessional rooms - not that I’ve ever been in one!

I’ve seen both terms used, also no term used and it’s just “Confessions will be held in Room 2”.

My parish has a sign on a now unused confessional that reads “Confessions will be held in the cry room.” While I understand that the “cry room” is where parents can sit for Mass with fussy kids, I also chuckle picturing people in their crying over their sins.

How much space is there? Tower fans work nicely for small spaces, if you can afford a Dyson I’d grab one up!

🤣

Oh, that is brilliant! 😂

Reconciliation Room is more common around here (or just confessional, even if it’s a room).

To the OP, I’d propose any fan will do. The added noise might even be a benefit to drowning out confessions if the room isn’t well insulated or sound-proofed.

There are all size fans now, pretty cheap you can buy at any hardware or department store.

It’s a confessional. I changed the original text to reflect that… sorry. Ive had problems remembering things and I’m not back to 100% yet.

It’s a very dry kind of hot. It doesn’t feel like there is any water in the air. So I’d say stagnant. There is a lamp in there that I think causes all of that. I’m just hoping for a specific fan that can be super quiet yet powerful while confessions are going on.

It’s a decent amount of space. There’s enough room for almost any kind of fan but no way to use a full blown AC unit. I’ve read some Dyson reviews and I just want to be sure that it can cool the effectively room and be quiet.

Hospitals use things like these when they need to have a conversation in private but everything seems hollow. The white noise generators are usually a niche market so it’s a better choice to use baby soother… things… I don’t know what the official name for them is. I think just white noise machines but I thought i saw “baby soothers” on a forum that was talking about fans and white noise. I may be wrong. But I linked one from amazon in case you’d like to donate one to your parish 🙂

I think the sound is handled pretty well. I can never hear anything when I’m outside waiting for my turn. It’s just the heat and making sure that the people who go are more comfortable. Especially since the older gentlemen are the only other people I see there now-a-days. I want to be sensitive to the noise when considering a fan so that absolutely no one ever feels annoyed by it while they confess. Confession is a place of many things, but we don’t want to lose our train of thought because of the fan making a clicking sound or because it’s super loud.

I’m just worried about noise levels. Most of the people going into confession are older. And if they can’t hear too well then the fan needs to be as quiet as possible so they can continue to talk without distraction and without hindrance.

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you’re on the mend.

Even more dramatically around here it’s known as “the crying chapel”, which sounds a bit the like Room of Tears in the Sistine Chapel.

The confessional at our church has windows to let in fresh air. The church is built on a hill, so the window is high above ground level, out of earshot.

I had to do a double take when I saw this. At first, I thought that it was a prison before I saw a cross on top of what I had originally thought was a guard tower.

I can see how your first look would give that impression, as I too needed to look more closely. A thought which came to mind after reading your comment re the tower similar appearance to a guard tower was ‘guarding the seal of confession’, seeing as it appears to be situated over the Confessional, especially in the current times.
