BAGHDAD, Iraq (AHN) – Key al-Qaida figure in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, is planning to attack the White House and the Vatican, according to an audio-tape posted on the Internet on Saturday.

This is the first time an al-Qaida leader has explicitly talked of attacking the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.

Earlier on Friday, in a similar audiotape, Zarqawi himself warned more attacks against US forces in Iraq.

He also urged followers to be cautious of any US attempt at initiate dialogue. According to reports, Zarqawi also launched verbal assault at Shia Muslims by calling them “rotten.”

The Shia Muslims are considered unorthodox by the Sunni al-Qaida. He didn’t spare Iraqi Sunni Muslim clerics for failing to support the insurgency.

The voice on the tape has been established as that of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s.

“After conducting a technical analysis, we assess with high confidence that the voice is that of Abu Musab al- Zarqawi,” An anonymous US intelligence official told the news agency.

Zarqawi’s recorded voice on the tape directly addressed US president George W. Bush.” You, Bush, we will not rest until we avenge our dignity,” the voice said. “We will not rest while your army is here as long as there is a pulse in our vein.”
 
Is this a real possibility or an empty threat? Could the Vatican defend itself? And what did the Vatican do to hurt that guy?

Well, the Qur’an says, 2:62 “Those who believe (in the Qur’an), and those who follow the Jewish (Scriptures), and the Christians … shall have their reward with their Lord.” But it also says, 5:54 “Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends.”

It also says 2:256 “Let there be no compulsion in religions,” but also, 9:5 “Fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them.”

So it seems that Muslims can find justification for being either friendly or hostile.

They are some sick ppl. Who needs the anti-Christ when ‘those ppl’ are ruled by the devil himself! Im sorry if anyone finds my words offensive but I had 3 relatives in TWC on 9/11. One is fine, one was blinded when the second plane hit right over his head and the other never made it out at all. I’ll never understand this so called ‘peaceful’ religion.

I don’t understand it either. In any case, I’ve found Muslims who are peaceful and ones who absolutely hate Christians. I think the fanatics are just people who are so consumed by hatred, they need to justify it somehow.
 
Odd that they want to target the Vatican as the Church did not exactly see eye-to-eye with the U.S. on the war on terror, but then again, what can you expect from a cult of death?

Aside from a small force of Swiss Guards, the Vatican’s security is provided by the Italian government particularly around its perimeter. In the photos of Pope Benedict visiting his old apartment shortly after being named as Pope, the policemen guarding him were not Swiss Guards but carabinieri, which is the national police force. The attempted assassin of Pope John Paul II was tried in Italian courts. I don’t think the Vatican has a judicial system so crimes that occur there would be adjudicated by the Italian criminal justice system according to the treaty between the Vatican and Italy.
