I’m glad they got the opportunity to be presented with a situation where their prayer wasn’t the one presented and their deity wasn’t the one being invoked. Maybe they can understand why people of various faiths are uncomfortable or put in a compromising position when Christian prayers are invoked at civil or public events.

It’s discriminatory by nature.

A new policy allows anyone to deliver an invocation, regardless of religion.
Yep. The government cannot favor one religion over another. That is that whole point of the Satanic Temple’s activity. By walking out, the borough officials basically said that it is fine for the government to say that their religion is acceptable, and another religion is not. I don’t want to live in a country where the government has that power.

The Satanic Temple member has the right to give an invocation. At the same time, free expression allows the officials to walk out.

Indeed. I’m Catholic but believe that if prayer is allowed that needs to apply to all religions. As a result I don’t think that public prayer should be part of government meetings. If they want time can be allocated for private prayer or medidation.

Anyone who says “hail Satan” unironically is well deserving of a walkout. I’m glad some people had the guts to show their disapproval of someone’s allegiance to darkness.

Personally, I’d set a rosary out on my table to remind them of a woman who Satan himself is subject to.

AS the Church in the US begins “Religious Liberty Week” on Sunday, each of us must remember that we are praying not only for Catholic Christianity. We pray for all Americans to have freedom to practice their religion.

Their belief in Satan is probably insincere anyway, so their invocation was probably trivial and not worthy of respect in my opinion

Nor do I. I find the concept bizarre.

I’d just call it a moment of silence. What people do in that moment is immaterial, whether they pray to God, pray to Satan, or think about being on a sandy beach surrounded by a bevy of hula girls plying them with plates of roast pork and ice cold pina coladas to the accompaniment of a soothing steel guitar band.

That’s the way I see it, too. Their “Satanism” is more than likely anti-Christianity veiled under a “religion” .

I feel bad for her. I just said a prayer that God would draw her to true and deep faith in him. I love that we have freedom of religion, but sometimes I wonder if it lulls some of us into thinking that all religions are equally true. God help her.

What belief in Satan? They don’t believe in Satan.

You have the right to have that opinion as a private citizen, but the government doesn’t. Would you want to live in a country where the government evaluates the sincerity of your Catholic beliefs?

They don’t believe in Satan, so they aren’t really religious and so aren’t exercising a freedom of religion.

so they aren’t really religious
The government does not have the right to make that determination. They have to take a person’s statement of belief at face value, regardless of whether it is true or not.

Hindu faith, a non-parody religion, is sincere and therefore deserves respect

Well, the Temple of Satan’s publicly stated position is that they’re atheist and don’t actually believe in God or Satan and that they do these things to shock people.
