Does the devil do alot of his work through using alcohol to influence people ???
Is it his brew of destruction ???

Fauken took the words out of me.

OP, where did you get this idea? Did you hear it from baptists by any chance?

Why would Jesus’ first public miracle involve the "devil’s brew of destruction’?

Why would Jesus come to us under the species of alcoholic wine?

There is a stripe of anti-Catholicism that takes on a prohibitionist stand to alcohol.

Like anything good, food, the marital embrace, alcohol can be taken and turned into something destructive. Satan does encourage us to make the beautiful things of this life into distorted ugly things.

No. Brew comes about through a process of fermentation. It is healthy in moderation and lifts the spirits.

The devil can use it as a weapon by taking advantage of a person’s lack of temperance.

I was going to make the same point, but you snuck in ahead of me. Thank you for saving me the trouble!

I know that some Protestant churches use grape juice instead of wine for their “Lord’s Supper,” but AFAIK wine is required for the Eucharist in the Catholic Church.

When we try to do a generalization like that we always run into issues.
Food is a good thing, it keeps us alive.
Food can be delicious, although for the primary purpose of “keeping us alive” it does does not need to be.
Food is good.

Now the caveat. “Gluttony is a sin”.

Gluttony is eating NOT because it nourishes us but for selfish, purely pleasure motives.

And so it goes for many many things in life…

If somebody gets morally weak when they drink, the devil uses that.
If somebody gets morally weak when they watch Power Puff Girls cartoons, eats hamburgers, or reads Shakespeare, the devil uses that.

There are a significant number of people whose morals slip when they drink, but there are also a significant number of people whose morals do not slip when they drink, and thus the devil finds some other way to work on them.

Alcohol in and of itself is not bad - it’s the way people use it (often excessively) that’s bad. Couple glasses of wine with dinner is fine for most people. 2 bottles of wine chugged at a frat party is not.

Most people never intend to become alcoholics, it often starts out as fun and social. Then it becomes fun with problems, then alcohol is the problem. At this point it is virtually impossible for an alcoholic to have only one or two drinks.
Booze can bring out the worst in people, so it is a good tool for the devil. My dad died an alcoholic, sadly there seemed nothing any of us could do to help him.

That’s very true, and I’m sorry about your dad. That said, it doesn’t mean non-alcoholics can’t drink in moderation. There’s a lot of evidence that predisposition to alcoholism is genetic. Someone without a family history doesn’t need to be quite as cautious.

All of the answers you received are correct about alcohol. I would think drugs are where evil lies. I have seen lives totally destroyed, people turned away from God. As Eric said about alcohol no one intends to become an alcoholic, nor does anyone intentionally. want to become a drug addict. The devil preys on people when they are down. Our prayers for those in addiction of any form. God bless you.

And anti-Christ, since they’re declaring His first miracle as evil. Granted, they concoct their own alternative history (i.e. “it was grape juice, not wine”) to get around that, but I doubt most of them are aware that alcoholic wine is used in the Eucharist.

I think it’s a lack of moderation that is the devil’s tool and he can use that on anything. Alcohol is just one thing. He can lead someone to sin by food (gluttony), sex (lust) etc. if we don’t practice moderation, but if we do then he can be defeated.

Alcoholism has a genetic component. People who have it in the blood family should be aware.
My parents drank socially, so did I. None of us ever had a drinking problem, nor was there one in the extended blood family. I’ve had times in my life where I drank a few times a week, other times when I didn’t drink at all. It’s easy for me to stop. As of today I’ve drank 3 times in the past year. Tonight I am meeting friends at a bar event, I’ll be drinking Coca Cola as I don’t feel like drinking.
No big deal.

As the other person said, sorry about your dad but it doesn’t mean everybody who enjoys a beer ends up in alcohol rehab.

However, your generalized condemnation of alcohol is still wrong.
In the UK - Alcohol is estimated to cost the NHS around £3.5bn per year, which amounts to £120 for every taxpayer, according to the latest available figures from the HSCIC. Overall, treating alcohol-related conditions costs the NHS about 3.6% of its annual budget. These figures do not include criminal damage, violence and the cost to the police and other agencies.

I continuously witness the impact of alcohol fuelled violence and rage. Last Friday I spent about an hour with a dozen angry drunks at 3 am.

The devil does a lot of his work by getting people to abuse alchohol. Alchohol is inherently good but its abuse is evil. If you take too many vitamins you will get sick.

Dr. Elaine Pagels is the Professor of Religion at Princeton Divinity. She wrote a book titled The Origin of Satan. Great News! Evil is real, the devil is Not. 666 does Not stand for Satan. It represents Caesar Nero.
