They base their entire belief on that one Scripture that says, “Do not get drunk on wine.” And totally ignore the fact that JESUS even created wine at Cana!

And you know the old proverb, “Baptists can recognize one another everywhere, except in line at the liquor store…”

😉
lol. That’s an OLD joke.

Are you saying that it’s being taught that light to moderate drinking is a sin?

Because it seems to me that “Do not get drunk” is pretty clear that moderation is okay.

So you’re against even the Liturgical use of wine?
Of course not, that’s sacramental wine. Haven’t you ever seen Mel Brooke’s as the Rabi in Robin hood men in tights. Its used for blessing things. 😉 😉
I just figured a church would be the one place you can go for refuge from such things.
I’m strait edge myself. SxE for life, XXX

“Refuge” implies protection, which in turn implies that there is something from which protection is needed. Given that alcohol consumption is permissible, there is no need for a church to be a refuge from it.

This is coming from a straight-edge.

For clarification, the narthex is in my experience totally separated from the worship space. At the very least there are doors you can close.

At my parish they offer coffee and donuts after every Sunday mass in the narthex. And why not? Heaven forbid people linger, relax and be social with other catholics. Seems like in some places there was an 11th commandment taught: “Thout shalt get thy car off the property less than 5 minutes after the end of mass.” Well, it ain’t in MY bible…

If coffee and donuts are OK, I see no reason that wine and cheese should be disparaged after an evening program.

Was the wine fermented? or was it juicy juice?

It was real wine at the last supper, when Jesus made it his blood.IMHO there is no such thing as unfermented “wine”.

There was no way to keep grape juice from fermenting in the 1st century, until refridgeration and pasturisation became possible in the 19th century.

Before that even Evangelicals used wine (real wine) in their Lord’s Supper.

I personally don’t think it has any business in church. I don’t see it different then any other drug.
I don’t know what the big deal is, alcohol, espcially beer has played a big role in the history of the church (forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=668418).

In my parish, there is a trivia night, for 21 and over, were beer was available as well as a pasta cook off, complete with wine tasting, both events held in the multi-purpose room of the Church.

I guess they don’t have the “Theology on Tap” series in Baptist country, eh? 🙂

Personally, I find some of the speakers have more worrysome than the beer they serve…

Because for people who grew up in trashy families, with drunks and druggies, Church is a place to find peace with God and to take refugee away from those things. Not to continuously see it celebrated. I can’t complain about what someone does in their own home
However, I feel that such things as in my parish where they raffle off liquor for money during the wurst festival, is just dirty.
Why do people need liquor to socialize? its nothing more then a element put in society to control the people and keep them poor and stupid and destroy family. Why can’t people socialist over cake and ice cream, play volleyball, perhaps work out. Do something productive instead of making the parish into a bar. It just seems hypocritical to me.
for people of God. I personally think its my mission in life to make it hard for drunks.

Then at which point does that person become drunk. Because at my tolerance level I would get drunk off of a half a glass. At that point does it become a mortal sin? How can you make the distinction between social drinking and abuse, what are the guide lines?
I personally think that anyone that has more then one or two drinks a week is an addict.
Your right sugar is addictive, but no one is robbing pharmacies to support their sugar habit . Unless you count shop lifting candy bars.

How can you not?

How can you not?
The standards set by the state are .08 in Florida for DUI. I believe.
Can we say once a person over bounds that level he is non longer socially drinking and becomes a danger to everyone else surrounding him.

No. That level is what has been determined to be the standard for **possible **unsafe driving or operating machinery. Most people, in social situations, would have to be much more drunk than that to be a danger to anyone. And quite a few individuals can get very drunk and never be a danger to anyone as long as there is no driving involved. That being said, it is probably a sin against prudence for anyone to drink to the point where they can no longer make good decisions.

No one is talking about drugs in Church. And if you go back and read the OP, this was a special occassion to welcome new parishioners. No one was “celebrating” drunks or druggies, let alone constantly.

No. That limit simply indicates that driving would be a problem.

Anyway, sorry I didn’t mean to get off on a tangent, and off topic.

Statistically, drinking in church is surely quite a bit safer than playing volleyball in church.

Really? So when Jesus made it He was making it to destroy a family at a wedding where by definition a new family is created?

The logical failure there is big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

Not to mention wine in moderation has PROVEN health benefits.

It’s fine if you don’t like alcohol. But the Lord created it, drank it, provided it to others AFTER their supply had run out, and by His own decision established that an alcoholic drink is the only one that can be turned into His Precious Blood.

Given that, are you really accusing our Lord of putting that into His friends to control them and keep them poor and stupid and destroy their families?

I just don’t believe it was fermented alcoholic beverage. I thought the church did say at one time that lefties where the devil too. But I’m not gonna get into that because I’ve already gone off topic.

Do you have any basis for this belief? Why do you not believe it to be what the Bible tells us it is?

Why are you so enamored of the frozen lactic fluid of cows? Don’t you relaize that you’re taking the nourishment intended for the poor calves? You drink something that comes from a cows udder and you think beer is “dirty”??

My mission in life is to make it hard for people who steal sustenance from those adorable little baby calves…😃
