There was no refrigeration…fermentation is what happens to grape juice when it “spoils”

Why do people think so hard about excuses for our ancestors wine drinking?
Also, our ancestors had no knowledge of germs and the causes of dieseases. It wasn’t until the 1840’s that a dr figured out that washing your hands can prevent the death of women in labor. He was fired from his job because the medical establishment refused to believe him.

If the knowledge of the importance of handwashing is less the 200 years old then how could our ancestor’s know about the effects of germs in water?

SDA’s also prohibit alcohol consumption. They make all the excuses and circular arguments. One of thier leading theologists has a even written a book on it, (as well as many other subjects) but you can read parts of it online. I can’t remember the website name but if your interested his name is Dr. Samule Bacchiocci.
He has some very interesting theories but ultimatley his arguments ring hollow.
Wine in the Scriptures was just that, wine. Drink it and it tasts good, drink a little more and you feel good, drink too much and well, we all know what happens when we overindulge. Anything in excess is bad, that includes food, exersise, sunshine. There are abuses in every form and on many levels. The sin is in the intent of abuse. ( as in " I’m going to go out and get drunk tonight.") Even the medical community has sanctioned the use of moderate wine consumption to maintain a healthy heart. And grape juice does not contain the same enzymes. Unfortunatly, there are many that only see what they want to see, no matter how obvious the truth may be.
Sorry for my rant. This subject drives me a little crazy. :whacky:

I know several people (whole churches full) who can prove to you with selective Biblical passages that drinking alcohol is sinful. They believe any person drinking is personally sinning. It is not a matter of leading others to sin or being good Christian witnesses to them. In this group are most prominantly Seventh Day Adventists, Baptists, Assemblies of God, and non-denominationals. The thought process is most assuredly out there in full force. (Of course, Protestant groups not having a magesterium, you cannot say it is “Baptist doctrine” or universal to all Baptists, and I do not presume to. I simply point out that I know entire churches who label themselves with this title who preach this from the pulpit.)

One other question I have, for recovering alchoholics is there a non-alchoholic alternative? I know for a lot of those brave souls that are battleing that particular disease having any alchohol at all (even the minute bit in the cup) might be enough to rekindle cravings. My father in law is Catholic and just got his one year button in AA (we are so proud of him) but I would think it would be tragic if he couldn’t take the cup because of this decision.
Mustum is a proper alternative.
NORMS FOR USE OF LOW-GLUTEN BREAD AND MUSTUM
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
August 22, 1994

II. Concerning permission to use ‘mustum’:
A. The preferred solution continues to be , or in concelebration under the species of bread alone.

B. Nevertheless, the permission to use can be granted by ordinaries to priests affected by alcoholism or other conditions which prevent the ingestion of even the smallest quantity of alcohol, after presentation of a medical certificate.

C. By is understood fresh juice from grapes or juice preserved by suspending its fermentation (by means of freezing or other methods which do not alter its nature).

D. In general, those who have received permission to use are prohibited from presiding at concelebrated Masses. There may be some exceptions however: in the case of a bishop or superior general; or, with prior approval of the ordinary, at the celebration of the anniversary of priestly ordination or other similar occasions. In these cases the one who presides is to communicate under both the species of bread and that of , while for the other concelebrants a chalice shall be provided in which normal wine is to be consecrated.

E. In the very rare instances of laypersons requesting this permission, recourse must be made to the Holy See.

It has been much harder to be a good Baptist than it ever was to be a good Catholic…because now it’s up to me, I’m responsible, no one else.
Say what?
Also one of the reasons wine is so prevelent in the bible is that it was “clean” the fermentation process killed bacteria…other than water, a lot of other things would spoil and even water was often polluted or poisoned.
Care to explain the meaning of “rock” to us?
