Mardukm - as per our previous discussion in this tread -can you provide any quotes or sources, either ancient or modern, that spell out the relationship between the primacy of the Coptic Pope and of the Syriac patriarch and the primacy of St. Peter?

Dear brother in Christ Cavaradossi,

I think this rather proves my point. Milan became the new capital of the empire, and Rome had already become a mere figurehead capital for some time. Yet the bishop of Rome still held the primacy. Even after the seat of the Empire moved to Constantinople, the bishop of Rome still held the primacy. So the notion of primacy held precedence (no pun intended) over the notion of precedence in the mind of the Church.

Blessings,
Marduk
Milan never became the new capitol of the empire under Diocletian’s reforms, it became the administrative center of Northern Italy when the diocese of Italy was split into two. Rome still remained the capitol of the West, even after Constantinople was established. What this event reflects is that the Church of Rome was willing to conform to civil rearrangements long before the so-called marriage of Church and state.

Check out Church History, Volume One, From Christ to Pre-Reformation by Everett Ferguson, especially Ch. 7.
