The brother of the Turkish gunman who shot and seriously wounded Pope John Paul II said today he has requested an audience with Pope Benedict XVI.

Adnan Agca, the brother of Mehmet Ali Agca, said he would travel to Rome with his mother to meet Benedict if the Vatican accepted their request.

The family made the request for an audience about 10 days ago but had not yet received an answer.

“However, we have heard that the Vatican is looking at our request positively,” Agca said.

John Paul II met with Mehmet Ali Agca in an Italian prison in 1983 and forgave him for the shooting.

Agca was extradited to Turkey in 2000 after almost 20 years behind bars in Italy. He is serving a 17-year prison sentence in Istanbul for earlier crimes in Turkey.

John Paul II met with Adnan Agca in Italy in 1997.
