Hey, she’s speaking at a local parish tomorrow. I wish I could go. 😦

For anyone in the Indianapolis area, it is at 3/15/06 at Holy Rosary Parish on Stevens St. at 7:15. Then you can come back and give your personal first impression.

As a SAHM mom of six (sorry, not ten), I like anyone who speaks up for the vocation of motherhood!! Go, Alice, go!!

My parish, and I’m planning to go. Actually, that’s what prompted my question.

Cool, Katy, I wish I was going. I said that all ready, didn’t I? They have such great speakers at Holy Rosary. I’m going to try to go to Fr. Francis Mary and Fr. Apostoli talks.

Eat some extra spaghetti for me!

She has been interviewed on ETWN and is very disciplined, very precise, very focused, and very serious about her Catholicism.

Dr. Alice AND spaghetti? My husband will be so jealous. He has to teach tonight- Ethics.

OK, here’s the review. She was rather frail in appearance, but steadfast in her views. Evidently she is reviled more by her critics as a man hater than as a door mat type of woman. She didn’ seem concerned about being in anyone’s camp but God’s, and she was grateful for the Catholicism of her youth. She is concerned about the truth of the faith being lost to so many nowadays. The main point that I got from her talk is that love always leads to suffering, but the Catholic/Christian truth is that the greatest suffering and defeat borne with love and for Christ leads to the greatest triumphs. She also said that a man has the ability to understand a woman the best and vice versa due to their complementarity.

Thanks for the review!

If it hadn’t been for feminism she would never have had the opporutnity to be allowed to go to school, to get a Ph.D. in philosophy, to then earn a position as professor emeritus, to write and publish books, to lecture.

Before feminism women were confined to the home, wives or mothers was all the could be. (Or nuns.)

What was life like for women a few hundred years ago before the beginnings of feminism? Even after feminism began to some extent schools for women were “finishing schools” teaching women how to be homemakes. Only relatively recently have women been full participants in the highest echelons of academia. All thanks to the efforst of feminists. Voting, opportunities in academics, the workplace etc. are all things feminists fought for and suceeded in winning.

As far as holiness goes? I don’t know. The Church has been around for 2000 years, in Medieval Europe it had tremendous power. They had plenty of opportunities to raise women on an equal footing with men, but they didn’t.
While it appears that this is all true…I would like the chance to read Alice’s book…The Privilege of Being a Women…Then I would like to give your arguements some thought…I’m not sure exactly what it is you are arguing but maybe I will have a greater sense after I read the book…and it is on my shelf right now…going to retire for the evening to read and then sleep on it.

I heard here recent discussion on EWTN Live and it seemed to me that she was very true to the Catholic teachings on the equality of the genders in dignity but that there are physical differences.
Regarding her “hypocracy” as being a tenured professor and speaking against current feminism first of all from the discussions My understanding is she obtained her honors in spite of significant bias against women in philosphy at the time and against her traditional philosophical beliefs against modern relativism. Here tenure took a very long time to obtain and was due to her merits as a teacher, not due to following a traditional tenure track. The arguements I have heard against femanism are not against the concept of equality but against the idea that there are not differences between the genders.
Based upon what I heard on EWTN LIve she is consistant in her beliefs and much more logicalin her ideas then most people.

In her talk, she related how difficult it was to fing a job in Philosophy, as most universities said they just did not hire women for that department. I don’t believe she got any help from feminism.

She is still, in her 80’s, quick on her mental feet. Someone asked in the Q&A session what she thought of epidurals in childbirth. She thought just a moment and responded, “Judge not, lest ye be judged.”

They had no children, but she said she has many “spiritual children”. that she cares for very much.

It’s strange that so many women are worried that AvH is giving them short shrift, because if you read what she actually says, the only real point she has to make about the sexes is that women are vastly – infinitely, even – superior to men. I would say that in no way does AvH show an untoward admiration of men. On the contrary, she is, unequivocally and unabashedly, a Catholic female supremacist who teaches the inferiority of men.
