Are you going to dress up as a saint or an angel and give out holy cards, Bibles, or candles in exchange for candy, or are you going to go to a big party and sing and dance and have fun, or are you going to stay at church all evening, or are you going to stay at home all evening, or something else?

I’ve been invited by some Wiccan friends to attend their “Samhain” gathering to honor the dead that have beem Called back to the Presence this past year…they said “gone to the Summerland”…It’s pot-luck. They said nothing serious taking place…just “raising a glass” to departed loved ones and celebrating their lives. They plan on keeping it “low-key.” I’ll probable stop by and then go home and watch TV and give out candy.
 
Well, in this case, the westernized ideal turning what once was a sinister celebration, turned it into a very secular, time to let kids play make believe and spoil them with goodies celebration. Good idea on the holy cards, might as well get a plug into the works through it, what better way to share our faith, they come to our doors even so we don’t even need to leave our homes to do so.

especially if it is a large, black pot on an open fire…
 
Definitely spending it with my ghouls, trolling about the neighborhood. And OD’ing in candy.

And the next day we will celebrate with a “Dia de Los Muertos” dinner. Where we will gather with all the family, bring out pictures of everybody that has passed away and pray for the repose of their souls.

None of the above.

My boys and dress up a freakishly ghoulish characters and SCARE people silly at a haunted house. It is great fun! 👍
 
Dressing up with the little one and going trick or treating. I’ll be a princess, and my little Knight for God will be dressing up as Sir Peter from the Chronicles of Narnia.

No holy cards being passed out this year – which ones would I choose anyway? 🤷 Probably pencils or little notepads. I don’t need any candy around the house!

I’ll be handing out a choice of candy or toy at the door to all the cute little goblins and ghosties, and will appropriately celebrate Dia de los Muertos the day after.

As far as a “pop culture” holiday goes, I like halloween. You ring a stranger’s doorbell, they give you something for free, no strings attached. How can you not like that? 👍

oh, and FWIW, our Catholic parish had the BEST halloween party of anyone in town when I was a kid.
 
Well, Halloween’s kind of fizzled out in the city I live in… Halloween around here means the parents leading their kids on leashes around the local mall because everybody outside has razor blades in their candy :rolleyes:

I’m probably going to pray for my Protestant friends (It’s the anniversary of the protestant revolt!!) And my personal favorite: watch twilight zone and Alfred Hitchcock marathons the entire day!! Honestly, last year we got one knock on the door and we all jumped out of our socks. ONE knock! Then the next day comes the real holiday 🙂

You mean ‘holy day’. It’s important to make a distinction between holiday and holy day 🙂
 
For the holiday, I will be passing out candy to the kids, as is tradition in America. My son is going trick or treating as a Bumblebee and I will be a zombie.

I will not attend Mass in zombie attire.

That reminds me of a scene from a movie I saw on the life of St. Patrick. It came back to haunt him later in life - when the Bishops in England heard that he had once attended a Samhain festival (which he had later confessed and been absolved of), they wanted to depose him as Bishop of Ireland. Luckily, the Bishop of Rome stepped in and defended him, and he retained his Bishopric, because the Bishops in England could not go against the word of the Bishop of Rome. 🙂
 
Our trick-or-treating is usually the Sunday before. We will be giving out popcorn balls and [full size] candy bars.

On Halloween we usually find Halloween specials and films to watch on TV.

Just curious - straw survey. How many here would attend or send their children to a Church-sponsored Hallowe’en party, if one were taking place at your parish?

I will be dressing up like a certain 16th century monk, and nailing some theses on the door of a local Catholic church. :whistle: 😃

Actually I will be confirmed on All Hallows Eve. The parish decided to do it a little differently with me, since I am the first that they have brought in outside of RCIA in a long time. They are confirming me at a special daily mass that day. 😃 The only problem is that it is at a time they normally do not offere a mass, I’m afraid that they will forget to annonce it and that my family (non Catholics) and myself will be the only people in the congergation.
