All Hallows Eve is coming!

As usual the family will all be dressing up and going door to door. I hate the whole mall bit. just check the darn candy.

I will be dressing up like a certain 16th century monk, and nailing some theses on the door of a local Catholic church.

My parents did when I was a kid, I did when my kids were young, and God willing, I will with my (future) grandkids.

Every Halloween, my family and I go to the local nursing home and celebrate the birthday of our dear friend, Helen. She’s turning 100 this year!! Then, we spend some time with the other residents! It’s such a rewarding experience.

Well, I won’t be going to a parish party…

But our local ward has a ‘trunk or treat’ party every Halloween, where everybody comes to the church parking lot and opens the trunk (or the back gate) of their car, and decorates it. The kids go from car to car for their treats, and prizes go to the decorated cars and costumes, both kids and adults. Then we have a dinner and party for the kids. The ward kitchen is thrown open, and everybody gets to make popcorn balls, fudge…Halloween is a fun holiday.

Since we do not celebrate All Soul’s Day (except for those of us…a growing population…who are Hispanics and have this tradition, of the Day of the Dead.)
 
In our ,mountian town no one goes door to door. The town closes down the main street and everyone goes from Business to business collecting candy. Its quite a lot of fun for kids and adults too. We go with the with a group of friends every year and then go to one of our homes for a big pot of chili.

My wife just had our first child about 7 weeks ago, and we’re really looking forward to Halloween. The week before, our youngin’s gonna be baptised, and we’re really excited about that. For Halloween, I have a Yoda costume ready for my little man to wear. While he may not be a saint, he was certainly a force for good.
 
I plan to hide in my reading room and let my wife pass out the candy. Those little children in their costumes, begging, scare me!!! :eek:
 
As someone who comes from a family really in touch with our Irish Celtic heritage, Halloween has always been a very fun holiday for myself and my family. I think this feast is one of the largest examples of how the Church is not imperialistic but is very respectful of local culture and takes the native ideas of the area she enters and enlightens them with the Gospel (in this case transforming it from a festival welcoming the dead back to our realm, to a festival that celebrates the fact that even if they cannot come back to us, they are fully alive in God and we still have a true connection to them).

If I could, I would dress up as Martin Luther and trick or treat at your doors.

I attended a “dumb supper” one year with some Pagan friends…food wasn’t good…but the company was excellent:) The mead went right to my head…not at all like the Berringer Chauser’s Mead that I use to purchase in the Santa Cruz mountains some twenty to thirty years ago…that was good mead.
 
I’m going to leave my son’s All Saint’s costume up for a while. I think he will go trick or treating as Bumblebee, though. I suggested he have the angel underneath so he could “transform” back and forth.

I am going to cut a hole in a plastic platter for my head, add some red paint and a beard and go as John the Baptist’s head on a platter.
 
Halloween is insignificant where i live (although the young are slowly taking it on board thanks to american popular culture). So i will probably spend the day as its meant to be spent, that is remembering the deeds of the saints, and giving thanks to The Lord.

Thanks for that gift. You know Pope Benedict XV1 is my favorite Pope because he teaches justification by faith alone and agrees with Martin Luther! Okay, I will be going trick or treating dressed as Martin Luther carrying my Pope Bear! Catholics and Protestants uniting can be a scary thing…

Pope Benedict XVI isn’t proclaiming anything different than what the Church has already stated, justification by faith (the intellectual belief) and works (the love), is the same as saying faith working in love which we know is what St. Paul said in Galatians. I think when Martin Luther said justification by faith alone, he meant faith as in intellectual belief (no works, i.e., love needed to be saved) justifies. So again if the pope is stating by faith alone you are justified, he means faith working in love or faith as in intellectual belief and works (love) are needed to be justified.

I think you have a misunderstanding on what Martin Luther believed about justification by faith alone. The Reformers did not believe that mental ascent alone saves sinners. What do you think about this quote from Luther?

“There is no justification without sanctification, no forgiveness without renewal of life, no real faith from which the fruits of new obedience do not grow.”

The Pope and Luther are saying the same thing in different ways. Do you seem to agree?
 
that is CCD day so we will have our annual All Saints Fiesta, saint costume contest, skits on lives of the saints by Jr. high classes, procession, and party
