This is not a reason why Christians do not subscribe to Averroism.I think you are making a generalization. Many Protestants do, but true Christians (i.e., Catholics) do not. True Christians are pro-science.
Yeah, I have to agree with this statement. I don’t see too much coming out of any other major religions other than the Jews and Christians. The communists and Hindus are mostly in ‘catch up’ mode with the Judeo-Christian nations. And the muslims blame the West for all their own ills, and use inventions for more weaponry, or to have the more wealthy muslims live in luxury.

Now the Hindus used to be a more advanced peoples until they were wracked with death and violence by the muslim hordes in several Jihads against them over the centuries. They might have been a major factor in science and discovery if not for that.

I have talked to some Protestant Christians and they are very pro-science. But some do have some sort of a disconnect when it comes to the beginnings of the earth. They are unable to fathom that the earth is a bit older than they believe. But they have no problem with scientific inventions and research. It doesn’t make sense to me, but they are not out to do anyone any harm overall. So, they can believe what they want as far as I am concerned.

The problem with reading Islamic texts in regards to their idea of science is that they are trying to prove that the koran is correct instead of finding out a scientific fact.

**I did not find any true scientific fact in the koran. ** I did find a lot of warping, or maybe you could say wraping, some sort of holiness around a lot of bad things though.
**It is written in Quran:
  1. We Created everything in pairs.
    [36:36] سُبْحٰنَ الَّذِىْ خَلَقَ الْاَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا مِمَّا تُنْۢبِتُ الْاَرْضُ وَمِنْ اَنْفُسِهِمْ وَمِمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ‏ [36:37] سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ] Holy is He Who created all things in pairs, of what the earth grows, and of themselves, and of what they know not**.
  2. We Created every living thing from water.
And Allah has created every animal from water. Of them are some that go upon their bellies, and of them are some that go upon two feet, and among them are some that go upon four. Allah creates what He pleases. Surely, Allah has the power to do all that He pleases.

And so printing in big letters makes this a proof?

Mohammed took stuff out of the Bible and then you guys say the Bible is corrupt. How do you know which parts were corrupt and which weren’t?

And that stuff you posted isn’t science. There is no science in it. It is a belief - your ideology tells you to believe it.

And as for pairs, I have seen animals treat their ‘pair’ better than I have seen come out of Islam!!! Because Mohammed didn’t understand the female body and psyche, he said that they were dirty and inferior and most of them bound to hell. I just don’t see the superiority in the koran in anything. It seems to be a book made up by a fellow who wasn’t very bright because most of the things were known centuries, if not millenia, before he was born.

What are you talking about? before you start claiming something you should read!!

islam doesnt know the female body? come on,the prophet gave advices in the hadiths on how to sexually satisfy a woman etc…compare that to the christian faith who says sex is dirty. In islam sex is a good deed!

I think that Mohammed was really focused on his sexual escapades. You are right!

No one said that sex is dirty in Christianity. But, I don’t care about Christianity - so you will have to find another excuse, or deflection, to use. we are talking about Islam here. And Mohammed was so focused on sex that it fills the Koran, besides his obsession with unbelivers and how much he reviled them. And he loved it so much he wanted to do it with children. And don’t tell me about priests when your clerics, and men, like to marry them and no one cares. I suppose when there is no moral clarity then anything goes.

Yes I do, but it did not satisfy you.
You call it “evidence” to say that they were both concerned with the same question?

What major philosopher in a theistic religious tradition is not concerned with that question?

I’m talking about actual historical evidence, like naming the major Averroist Islamic philosophers of the last eight centuries, or pointing to fatwas by leading Islamic clerics recommending that everyone read Averroes.

So what? He doesn’t really have a say in what the scientists are doing anyway. And the article even says that all this hubbub about what happened to Galileo is taken out of context since Galileo was supported by the Pope. The Pope is a spiritual leader, not a leader in science.

While the West, a Judeo-Christian based society, forges ahead in science and discovery - the muslim world lags. And since you are a Hindu - it has been the West helping India by bringing business, hiring Asian Indians, etc here in the West. It was the muslims who ravaged India when it was a thriving, advanced nation. It wasn’t the muslims who was able to make the muslims rich by oil - it was the West. It wasn’t the muslims who helped other muslims free themselves from tyrants, it was the West. It wasn’t the muslims who helped India out in anyway, in fact there has been another Jihad going on in India that has stepped up its violence.

This pic is of a Jewish guy because they really don’t count the number of Christian winners of the Nobel peace prize, but take note of the numbers:

http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/index_files/Islam-Judaism.jpg
In 2007 Islam and Judaism’s holiest holidays overlapped for 10 days.
Muslims racked up 397 dead bodies in 94 terror attacks across 10
countries during this time… while Jews worked on their 159th Nobel Prize.

I will say they do not tell us how many Hindus had won anything in the science category. If they did - good for them. maybe you know. But I am not trying to bash the Hindus, I am saying that they have been devastated by Jihad just like so many others. I don’t understand your note unless you don’t understand that the Christians can separate Church and State.

Yeah. Bruno is a living example. Gallileo another.
Giordano Bruno? He was not Catholic, being a materialist and pantheist.

I do not see how you can conclude this, per se, implies the Church is pro-science although it does agree with some scientific studies.

So, in other words, we are obsessed with a pluralism of “truths” that we invent instead of understanding objective reality? This is definitely related to the Averroists’ “double-truth,” although today it is not just a religious/scientific dichotomy. Today, many believe in what one could call a “multiple-truth:” scientific truth, religious truth, your truth, my truth, etc. But there is only one truth!

So what? He doesn’t really have a say in what the scientists are doing anyway.
What about in matters of ethics like embryonic stem cell research, etc.?
And the article even says that all this hubbub about what happened to Galileo is taken out of context since Galileo was supported by the Pope. The Pope is a spiritual leader, not a leader in science.
And scientists are not spiritual beings?
I don’t understand your note unless you don’t understand that the Christians can separate Church and State.
No, true Christians do not. They are in the world but not of it. By separating Church and state, you imply a sort of “double-truth” like that of the Averroists: a religious truth and a secular or scientific truth, but there is only one truth, unless you subscribe to the self-contradicting philosophy of relativism.

The Pope can have an opinion just like anyone else. And he leads a Church that will follow him, but the scientists are not necessarily Catholics, or other types of Christians.

Yes, there can be a separation of Church and state or else you wouldn’t be letting such ideologies as Islam, Communism, etc into America and especially supporting (appeasing/apologizing) for them and their behaviors and deeds. And yes, I have heard your clergy and people do such things such as appease and apologize for people with such ideologies. People are certainly influenced by their beliefs, and we saw that in Bush and people denigrated him for it and now with Obama we see him influenced by his being a muslim and a ‘black theology’ follower and no one says anything about that.

Some scientists are spiritual and some are not.

People contradict themselves all the time. In fact one of the ideologies I mention contradicts itself quite often, and that is islam. And all their contradictions allow the followers to pick and chose whatever they want out of their religion to convey to people to give the aura of goodness while others do bad things. And since it is all ok, and actually the bad things are dependent on their supposed salvation, no one does anything about it. And in fact, your Church as a whole does nothing about it either. While they preach the opposite, they appease and apologize for this ideology that does and teaches bad things.

I don’t really understand your argument, or your point. It is like you want to discuss in circles. Averrism was rejected in islam because they only recognize one truth that controls their politics, their idea of religion/rituals, their private ritualistic behaviors.

In our country now, we have mostly Christians and what do we see? A surge ahead in embroyonic research. It was kept under check when Bush was president, but so many people, Christians, complained that Bush was stifling its research.

I don’t find a lot of moral clarity from some of the Bishops and Popes either. Your Pope kisses a koran, and him and many others haven’t a clue about islam and say things about it that can be dangerous to their followers and we see in many lands Christians are persecuted and killed in droves because of this same ignorance.

Ridiculous. Besides, one cannot study anything scientifically before the Big Bang. If you know of a way, please enlighten us.

The only safe sex is no sex. Condoms do not prevent the spread of aids. Abstinence and a monogamous marriage DO prevent the spread of aids.

This would be laughable if it wasn’t so stupid.

The Pope says we’re obsessed with scientific reality! [Archive …

The Pope also said that the Church is interested in the truth, and this means scientific examination and research.

The Pope can have an opinion just like anyone else.
Popes most often do not speak according to opinion but according to the teaching authority of the Church, the Magisterium. E.g., the Pope saying that contraception and abortion are immoral or that Mother Mary was always an immaculately-conceived virgin, is not merely his own personal opinion.
And he leads a Church that will follow him, but the scientists are not necessarily Catholics, or other types of Christians.
Of course people are free not to heed the Pope; but true, productive, innovative science is always in-line with the Church’s teaching. Of course one can try to point to the Galileo affair as a counterexample, but the whole “warfare hypothesis”—that the Church is against science—is patently false. In fact some hypothesize that if it were not for the Church, science would not have progressed as much as it has up to our modern times.
I know people who consider Obama a Muslim, including myself.
Some scientists are spiritual and some are not.
Every human who ever existed has a soul, so if spiritual means “having a soul,” then every scientist is spiritual.
People contradict themselves all the time. In fact one of the ideologies I mention contradicts itself quite often, and that is islam.
Considering the Averroists’ “double-truth,” it makes sense that Muslims are willing to contradict themselves.
Yes, sadly, this is happening. Catholics have lost the sense of “Church Militant,” not just physically but also spiritually. We are at war in the supernatural order against such false religions.
I don’t really understand your argument, or your point. It is like you want to discuss in circles. Averrism was rejected in islam because they only recognize one truth that controls their politics, their idea of religion/rituals, their private ritualistic behaviors.
Really? I did not know that.
In our country now, we have mostly Christians and what do we see? A surge ahead in embroyonic research.
The U.S. is very, very far from being a Christian nation, in my opinion.
It was kept under check when Bush was president, but so many people, Christians, complained that Bush was stifling its research.
It is possible they had no idea it is immoral or they were Protestant “Christians” who may not have a Catholic-like dogma declaring such homicidal research immoral.
I don’t find a lot of moral clarity from some of the Bishops and Popes either.
Yes, I totally agree! I wish the modern popes would excommunicate and say “anathema” or “abomination” oftener. But that they do not in no way invalidates the Church, which is not merely a human institution. Even if the administers of the Sacraments, priests, are the most heinous sinners (and some are, even Popes), the Sacraments they properly administer are still valid.
Your Pope kisses a koran,
To this day I still do not understand that one. I am sure Christ was definitely saying to him, as he said to St. Peter, the first pope: “Go behind me, Satan, thou art a scandal unto me: because thou savourest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.” (Mat. 16:23). “Satan” means “adversary.” Even God Himself knows the Pope is not perfect, yet He still chooses that he lead the Church behind Christ, who is the ultimate head of the Church.
and him and many others haven’t a clue about islam and say things about it that can be dangerous to their followers and we see in many lands Christians are persecuted and killed in droves because of this same ignorance.
Yes, the next crusade has been, sadly, late in coming. The Crusades (except some of the later ones) were such a marvelous time in the Church because people actually defended the faith. (The Crusades were a defensive war.)

Oh yes, now the pices are falling. Hindus too habelieved in a BB like thing. Wonder if it impelled church to launch a reign of terror in Goa, India.
I am unfamiliar with that. Please explain.
It is easy as cheese. First who or what is chuch to comment on sceintific matters? NOTHING.
Exactly. The Church does not say: “The results of this science experiment are incorrect.” However, the Church can say, e.g.: “Killing innocent human beings to find a cure for diseases—regardless if the research does or does not find a cure—is unjustifiable.”
Now which iota of some sceince says that condom promote STDs HIV etc?
Although the scientific consensus definitely sways, unfortunately and erroneously, toward promiting more condoms, there are some researchers who have their doubts, e.g., Dr. Edward Green of Harvard, as this interview excerpt from the BBC shows:
William Crawley: So it would be a mistake to draw any causal connection between an increase in the use of condoms and an increase in HIV prevalence. That would be a mistake, wouldn’t it?
Edward Green: We don’t have any proof. The closest thing we have are some prospective studies that follow the same populations. There was one where–Norman Hurst of the University of California was one of the authors, it was published in the journal Aids–where they followed two groups of young people in Uganda, and the group that had the intensive condom promotion–and they were provided condoms after three years–they actually were found to have a greater number of sex partners. So that cancels out the risk reduction that the technology of condoms ought to provide. That’s the phenomenon known as risk compensation.
William Crawley: What do you mean by risk compensation?
Edward Green: This is when somebody uses a technology, such as condoms or sun-block, to reduce the risk, but then they compensate for that, or actually lose the risk reduction, by exposure to the sun longer in the case of sun-block or they take greater sexual risks in the case of condoms.
William Crawley: What you have suggested is that the use of condoms in Africa is a complicated story: it relates to abstinence and monogamy programmes as well. In those countries where there has been a reduction in HIV infection, such as Uganda, all three seem to play a part–abstinence, monogamy and the use of condoms. At least according to the United Nations Aids organisation (UNAids), all three play a part. Do you have any evidence at all that condoms are making the problem worse, which is what the Pope suggests?
Edward Green: Well I just mentioned a study that was done in Uganda that suggests that with intensive promotion of condoms you actually have people increasing the number of sexual partners, so in that sense–
William Crawley: But you have already accepted that there can be no causal inference drawn from that study.
Edward Green: Well, except that the phenomenon of risk compensation, or behavioural dis-inhibition, is real, and there have been articles, including published in The Lancet, about this phenomenon. So there could be a causal connection.
William Crawley: The Lancet has described the Pope’s comments, which you agree with, as a distortion of scientific evidence.
Edward Green: That’s because The Lancet is not thinking about the generalised epidemics of Africa. I hasten to add–and I have tried to do this in all of my interviews, although sometimes only part of my interviews are quoted–I point out that at national levels, we see condoms working in epidemics like those of Thailand and Cambodia. But in the generalised epidemics of Africa–well, there was a UN Aids study done in 2003 by Hearst and Chen, it was actually published in the peer-reviewed journal Studies in Family Planning in 2004, and they conclude that there is not a single country in Africa where HIV prevalence has come down primarily because of condoms.
Now how is your truth a truth but mine is NOT?
Read this by the Berkeley philosopher Searle.

Is that why you left the catholic church , R_not ?

Do all modern Islamic sects subscribe to Averroism, especially the idea of “double-truth,” i.e., that religious and scientific truths can be different and even contradictory? Averroism is a very dangerous philosophy, so much so that St. Thomas Aquinas wrote De Unitate Intellectus Contra Averroistas (“On the Unity of the Intellect Against the Averroists”) to counter it.
Averroism? Sounds like a special case of polylogism.

Is that why you left the catholic church , R_not ?
Who is R_not? I have not read any posts from that person.

I have been an atheist for some time. Before that I used to go back and forth between different things. I can relate to Buddhists, but when I looked into that it was a very long time ago. I just don’t look at all Christians as evil, or bad and neither do I look at any one group as all evil or bad. But there are a lot of bad things in the teachings of Islam that cause problems. If Christians want to be Christians, and if Jews want to be religious Jews then I really don’t give a big hoot over it.

I have a lot of Jewish friends, and also Christians and some Buddhists. I work with Chinese Buddhists. I don’t trust Muslims and they are not that friendly anyway. Most of the ones that I am around are black muslims. It seems they have chips on their shoulders.
