This is over at Northwestern College. I want to have some questions for them about the Apocrypha and want some people to go. Anyone?

Dr. Ed Glenny

“The Bible, the Apocrypha, and the Formation of the Biblical Canon”

A talk about the formation of the biblical canon, and why Protestant Bibles are different from Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles, and still why these early gnostic books like the gospel of Thomas were excluded from the canon.
Friday, April 11th at 7:30 p.m. A Free Event.
Room 2300 of Riley Hall on the Campus of Northwestern College.

I would love to go, in fact there once was a time I was planning on Northwestern as a possible college (then I decided to become Catholic, haha). But, sadly, I shall be out of the state that day. Make sure to tell me how it goes. 😉

Refer to the ‘apocrypha’ as the deuterocanonicals. Protestants get bugged by that.

Ask that perhaps the reason the canon the Catholic Church’s Council of Carthage (367) ratified can be trusted to be infallible is because the Church claimed infallibility? Rather than some miraculous, spontaneous miracle-work of infallibility working through the men at the council.

Ask why Luther took out the deuterocanonicals and why all the Protestant fathers were so cool with it.

Ask about the Marcion Bible, and if I can remember the name rightly, the Muratoriah Bible? Those were early canons, if memory serves me correctly. The Marcion Bible was of course heretical, but I don’t remember the story about the Muratoriah.

All I can think of now, I might do some research and have some more questions to be asked.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll check in to those bibles. I also have Kneckt’s Catholic Bible commentary that goes heavily in to a discussion of the Dueteros. Yes I emailed the guy and called them that. 🙂

I wonder if his talk comes from his dissertation on the Septuagint of Amos?
