LDS Missionaries are skilled in presenting lessons to potential converts. They know family & friends will often object to the lessons. So, early on, the missionaries present passages of Scripture such as the following:
Mark 4:13-20 (ESV):
13 And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 **The sower sows the word.
15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. **16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy.
17 And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold."
The missionaries will say they are sowing the good seed of God’s Word; & objections from family and friends are the work of Satan, trying to take away the Word of God.
This was presented to me by Mormon missionaries around 1996. So, this is not an outdated belief.

I do not doubt that other religions have said things that were clearly not of God.I hope that you realize that catholic popes said some humdingers in the past. What to do? Likewise for protestant reformers. People are not perfect. I am sure that Paul said some humdingers also, it is just that we have no record of it. I am sure that he said much more than what we have in the new testament.
However, there are strict standards for those who call themselves “prophets.” Prophets can never be wrong in any revelation they claim came from God. If they are wrong, even once, they fail the Biblical test of a true prophet.
In my particular case, I took all lessons with Mormon missionaries, at the Mormon Bishop’s home, with the Mormon Bishop present. My daughter is a lds missionary at this moment and she is not very skilled in presenting lessons. Most missionaries are not that skilled nor do they know that family and friends will often object to the lessons. They have a message and they want to present it. Many young men and women are serving in foreign countries attempting to speak the native language. How skilled can they be after learning a language for some weeks before presenting the discussions to a lds investigator?
