"all opposition ( to Mormonism ) comes ultimately from Satan"

. . . Many Mormons, including their hierarchy, look upon any criticism—regardless of how honest and sincere—as perverseness inspired by the Evil One. . . .
LDS Missionaries are skilled in presenting lessons to potential converts. They know family & friends will often object to the lessons. So, early on, the missionaries present passages of Scripture such as the following:

Mark 4:13-20 (ESV):

13 And he said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 **The sower sows the word.

15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. **16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy.

17 And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold."

The missionaries will say they are sowing the good seed of God’s Word; & objections from family and friends are the work of Satan, trying to take away the Word of God.

This was presented to me by Mormon missionaries around 1996. So, this is not an outdated belief.

So just because a quote is older means that it is wrong or outdated?
Wrong? not necesarily. “outdated?” Well, that IS the general definition of ‘older,’ yeah. Especially considering that people are having some difficulties providing newer quotes. Believe me, I have no difficulty whatsoever in coming up with anti-Mormon quotes by Catholics and Protestants made–yesterday. I find it more than a little–looking for the appropriate term here and not finding it–that all those quotes against Mormonism made yesterday are being justified by the same five to seven quotes made a hundred and fifty years ago.
Well then. We better get rid of all writtings and talks from past leaders. There goes D&C, all the sermons and talks, discourses and perhaps even the scriptures themselves!
Goodness me. I wonder why it is that you think more of the writings of our early leaders than we do? WE do not equate them with scriptures, you know. By the way, you notice that we are NOT 'throwing them out." I just happen to be pointing out that those few statements by a few early LDS leaders made over a century and a half ago are–statements made by a very few LDS leaders made over a century and a half ago. The fact that you HAVE to go back that far to find something to be aghast over should be telling you something.

–and the fact that I’ll only have to go back about five minutes to find anti-Mormon stuff written by Catholics—and proudly published by them–should also tell you something.
I’ve seen quotes from over 1000 years ago used on this forum to defame the RCC and that seemed just fine. These quotes came from the general authority of the lds church, some even from the prophet. You can’t have it both ways; some things that the prophet said are great and others he just didn’t mean or don’t count.
See, here’s the thing; we are quite aware that our leaders are men; mere men, who have opinions of their own and are allowed to express them. Some of those opinions can be, and are, wrong. The opinion that the Catholic church is the 'whore of Babylon" is an incorrect opinion…and unlike many evangelical fundamentalist Protestant Christian types, is an opinion that is rather sharply corrected by the church if a leader expresses it. McConkie, when he wrote it in his 1958 version of “Mormon Doctrine,” was told to knock it off and change that in all future editions, because saying that was too far off the line of actual “Mormon Doctrine.”

That must have been rather embarrassing for Bruce R. McConkie, y’know. It was a rather public correction, after all.

So what do you want? Did some of our early leaders say this? Yes. Were they correct to do so? No. Does our saying they were incorrect prove that our church is false? No. All it proves is that the CoJCoLDS doesn’t think that the Catholic church is the whore of Babylon, no matter how much you guys want to think we do; that our leaders are quite capable of having opinions, expressing them, and being wrong; and that when they ARE wrong, the church is quite capable of telling them to fix it.

Oh, and that we don’t go burning everything that any of our leaders have said if it turns out that their words could possibly embarrass us.

In other words, sir, get a grip. You do NOT hold the high road on this one, no matter how much you want to invent one.

What about two Lds Missionaries approaching me as I walk into the Catholic Church in Logan Utah and ask me why I am going in? Then proceed to tell me about how my Church failed? I have been here for eleven years I could comment on this more if you like. They did come to Bible study with me, but they kept pointing at their own books so I don’t think they got anything out od it. But it was good to have them for awhile.

Its not just about comments made in the past. You know that, right?
What were their names?

Because if any LDS missionary actually did that at the CAtholic church in Logan, I know the Mission President, the stake presidents and most of the missionaries serving there. If a couple of them really stopped you as you were going into a service, that is so very much against the rules that they should, and WILL, be disciplined.

There are probably 100 years old+ materials in Mormon book stores like what I had encountered recently in 2004 or 5.

The LDS still puts out alot of material about the abomination church and the corrupt believers…
How about giving us some, Kathleen? Preferably somthing written during our lifetimes?

Where have you heard that catholics “endorse criticism to other church”? The church actually teaches that one who sincerely believes that one is following the one true church even if it is not the Catholic Church, deserves heaven. This is not to be confused with indifference. For example, C.S. Lewis writes in the Last Battle about a character, named Emeth, who is granted passage to Aslan’s country (Narnia’s heaven) even though he worshipped the evil Tash. You may think that this is a pathetic example but the Church also says that if an individual writing is true use it, even if it was written by pagan Aristotle, Anglican C.S Lewis, or Puritan John Milton.
Look at the sidebar of this forum, youngsaint.

Then give me your protest again.

Do you dismiss the writings of Founder, and First Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith due to the age of his writings?

At what point in history did the Mormon Prophets and Apostles speak truth?

Anna
Anna, if the writings are opinions (which they were) and they are wrong (which they were) then yes. I dismiss them. If those opinions are not codified in the LDS scriptures so as to be considered solid Mormon Doctrine, then yes, I dismiss them. If the church, in the last century and a half, has officially made it VERY clear that those opinions were misinterpretations of Revelation and are incorrect, to the point that very highly thought of leaders (soon to be apostles, even…) are publically corrected and told to fix the error so that something called “Mormon Doctrine” actually REFLECTS Mormon Doctrine, then yes, I dismiss them.

For you to insist that we believe this is just as stupid as if I claimed that Catholics believe that women are far inferior to men because Thomas Aquinus claimed that, while a male recieved a soul 40 days after conception, a female didn’t get hers until 80 days after conception.

Of course, at New Advent, the Catholic Encyclopedia does have this to say:" The female sex is in some respects inferior to the male sex, both as regards body and soul."

…so perhaps that was a bad example.

Dianaiad,

You said to me, “. . .For you to insist that we believe this is just as stupid. . .”

I did not insist on anything. I asked you two questions, which you still have not answered.

I will ask them again:

Do you dismiss the writings of Founder, and First Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith due to the age of his writings?

At what point in history did the Mormon Prophets and Apostles speak truth?

Anna

Not to mention, why in the world would anyone listen to them today?

Mormons win this argument. Try again Catholics.

What is wrong with thinking that the devil is the source of opposition to the truth?

Rory

Are your prophets simply expressing their opinions, or are they truly prophets receiving revelations from God???

Anna

And Joseph Smith said the church was an abomination and its believers corrupt…this is the construct of Mormonism…

So if you take us away from the original construct that the Church ceased after the apostles, you have an American man-made church reflective of the Stone Campbell movement of the 1830’s…

I always look to the founders of religions…they are the kingpin so to speak of their beliefs.

The Lord God called us to be one. We have so many good and different charisms that bring forth the greatness of our faith…Mormons included have many gifts…and together…our common faith can restore our country against all the afflictions against us.

I wish all Christians, if they believe in the power of Christ’s death and resurrection, to learn to make the outward profession of faith with the sign of the Cross, Father, Son and Holy Spirit!!!

Well said, Kathleen. Your kind heart shows through in your posts.

It is true–what you said about looking at the founders of a religion. [As a sidebar, I will say I am disturbed by the origins of Protestantism. I continue to study and pray.]

Origins always matter.

Dear mormons, your “religion” is in opposition to the truth, therefore, it is sourced by Satan.

Let’s see how that goes…

Oh yeah we already have…

True: Satan is the author of lies.

Mormonism was founded on the belief that all Christian religions (Catholics, Greek, Protestants) are an “abomination” and part of a “great apostasy.”

When faced with opposition, Mormons will claim Satan is attempting to steal the word of God planted by the Mormon church. So, from their viewpoint, you and I are under Satan’s influence.

Yes, Rebecca, this argument has been “done to death” on multiple threads. Same issues, same arguments, same outcome. I really need to “get a life.” 😊

🤷

I have asked the same questions before. Mormons have no answer.

A burning feelings…I’m sure was felt by Mormons “back then”, when their prophets were speaking opinion.

(No Catholic has ever believed Aquinas was a prophet.)

I have said that many times. I think Mormonism is of the devil (ultimately), as are all non-Catholic churches.

Soooooo…how do we suggest to groups that believe they are the one true church, like the Mormons, that it is somehow inconsistent for them to believe as we do?

I am all for postulating reasons to be Catholic and not LDS. This is not a good reason. If I were LDS, my faith would not be weakened by hearing that Mormons say, as they must if they believe in the devil, that other churches are ultimately under Satan’s influence. As a Catholic, it does not make me perceive the LDS Church as less true, because of such a belief. I have no thought of leaving the Catholic Church at this time (and by God’s grace I never will), but if I did, knowledge that the Mormons have this belief would make me more, not less open to their message.

I don’t get what is so sinister, or illogical about this belief, if Mormons indeed admit to it?

Rory

I agree with the poster Anna Scott; if one wants to get to the truth about a faith then you must go to its origins and study. Unfortunately, most people don’t take the time to study the ‘origins’ and simply go by what the believers of that faith are telling them.

I studied for a short time with the mormons and I have to say that I was impressed with the missionaries( all young adult girls). They were peaceful, humble, unassuming and very well-mannered, not to mention open-minded. They even came to one of the Catholic Masses for Easter; and when they did not find me at the church because it was full they remained there for the whole mass. When I saw them at the end of it, they waited for me and we spoke.

I don’t know if this is all a set up to get people to convert, but alas I did not and for varying reasons, mostly to do with the HS and the origins of their religion. Nonetheless, it goes without saying that there are very good people in every religion, who have a Christ-like mind and surely God will treat them accordingly to their deeds and heart. If they criticize us then let it be and just pray for them; we must teach others the example of true HUMILITY. I believe this to be one of the greatest of all character traits in a devoted christian.

God’s Blessings on Everyone.

I don’t even know what a side bar is… :o
Look at this page…look on the side of it, where you will see three books advertised for sale, promoted by CAF. These books are supported by Catholics, published by Catholics, written by Catholics, and ANYTHING but disavowed by the Catholic church. Now the titles will change every time you see this page, but about half the time the titles will include anti-Mormon titles. Right now, though, I see “Beginning Apologetics Vol.4 How to Answer Atheists and New agers,” “Answering Islam,” and “Islam, A Catholic perspective.” When I refresh the view, I get “Beginning Apologetics 9 How to Answer Muslims,” "Beginning Apologetics 2 (which is “How to answer Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses)” and “Answering Jehovah’s Witnesses.” Refreshing the screen a third time results in “When Mormons Call,” “Inside Mormonism, What Mormons Really Believe” and “Answering Jehovah’s Witnesses” again. Well, that’s 3 out of 9 for the Mormons. Islam gets treated to 3, Atheists and new agers get one, and Jehovah’s Witnesses get 3; one repeat and they share one with us.

So…would you care to revisit your post and rethink your position regarding the stand of the Catholic church in regard to other belief systems?
