No jobs were to be had back then. Signs everywhere saying no need to apply. And downtown salt lake was very depressed.

After meeting some great young adults, attending utah jazz games, and having three hot dogs for a dollar at Earl’s Video Parlour, I headed east. But I had a great 6 months in salt lake. Now mind you, I didn’t like the city. I was bored to death. The mass transportation was terrible. But the people that I met were great. I also attended the UU church. I liked it very much because the pastor spoke from a religious humanist perspective.

I was also contacted by polygamous missionaries. Even to this day, I often wonder just how life would have been with four wives. Perhaps you and I would have been neighbors. (Wouldn’t that have been a hoot!) 😛 The missionaries were not from a compound. 🙂

I agree, UT retains to a greater extent mormonism as it was taught by BY.

But, this SLC you remember doesn’t exist any longer.

4 wives? then when one is mad at you they would all be mad at you! not to mention some other unpleasntries i wont go into here. it happens when women are placed in the same location together for awhile. 😃 sounds rough to me. youd be too far outnumbered. lol! peace to you.

I know. It would not be easy navigating with four women. But you know how it is with men. I just imagine having four wives who love me and who keep me well fed. But…reality could have been different. 🤷

But I only had one missionary discussion. But it could have been nice being Rebecca’s neighbor. She could have gotten to know my four wives and me too of course and saw some great traditional mormons who love their faith and are just great people. 😃

Yeah, y’all could come over for cocktails, cigars and bbq on Sunday afternoons.

It was more the layout of the city…I thought it was a big village. But being from the east, the non mormons (not friends) thought I was catholic because of my last name and treated me as if I was one of them. I had the best of both worlds.

Many Mormons, including their hierarchy, look upon any criticism—regardless of how honest and sincere—as perverseness inspired by the Evil One.

Margaret Toscano was excommunicated from the LDS Church in 2000 for disregarding warnings from church leadership and continuing to write and speak critically about the role of women in Mormonism and the theological doctrine of the Heavenly Mother.
Toscano currently teaches classics at the University of Utah.

How is this message conveyed to girls growing up in this church?
…a young Mormon woman in her early 30s came to me. She knows that I talk about women’s issues. She was very upset, wanted to have a sympathetic ear, because she’s concerned about women’s issues. She’s concerned about the working-mother issue. She’s concerned about the fact that we can’t talk about Heavenly Mother in Mormon meetings. She has other concerns. And she told me a story about how she recently went to her bishop to tell him some of her concerns. He’s a friend of hers, so she was feeling that she could have a sympathetic ear here, and she was more or less shocked when, instead of being sympathetic to some of her concerns, he told her that she was being influenced by Satan and that if she were only not a working mother – that her real problem here is that she’s a working mother and that, because she’s a working mother, she’s now opened herself to the influence of Satan. This has made her dissatisfied with her role as a Mormon woman. …

The disturbing thing to me is that why would she be accused of being influenced by Satan when, if you look at her, she’s completely active in the church? She has three children. She’s a great mother. She’s very active in her ward. She has a church calling that she’s fulfilling. She’s doing all the outward things that she is supposed to as a Mormon woman. And yet, by questioning them, now suddenly she’s a pawn of the devil. …

When Mark Twain criticises your religion, you can take it as a complement, it is like the devil criticising your religion.
I take abusive language from Mormon apostates as a complement. When the devil hates you, that means you are doing a good job.

all opposition ( to Mormonism ) comes ultimately from Satan
It should read. All opposition to Mormonism comes from dedicated Christians who defend the faith using common sense and reasoning and faith to defeat a false religion . For this purpose we call on and are led by St. Michael the Archangel.

In the War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, Michael is described as the prince of light, leading forces of God against the darkness of evil, who is led by Belial

The lds church has distanced itself from the statements that were made in the past. In fact, what McConkie said was criticized by the leaders at that time. I am sure that we can go into the past and cherrypick what catholic bishops, popes, cardinals have said about protestants. We need to remember that catholics and reformers were spilling each others blood in Europe.

But I can say that the amount of persecution that the lds church receives today on the internet and in books is satan inspired. Of course constructive criticism is one thing…but the hateful criticism and remarks are quite another thing.
Telling the truth about Joseph Smith is considered hateful by Mormons.

Joseph Smith is a proven liar and charlatan.

Doesn’t that concern you?

Actually, those who oppose Mormonism…just like those who oppose Catholicism, or any other religious ‘ism’ out there, are actually asses who seem to have forgotten a core principle of human rights: the right to believe, and worship. as one pleases without interference and mockery.

Now…this does not mean that nobody should share their own beliefs with others; they very definately SHOULD do that, but there is a very big difference between sharing yours–and attacking thiers.

Challenging another’s beliefs is not the same as denying their rights.

I BELIEVE that Joseph Smith was a charlatan and liar who used his charisma to get laid, make money, and gain power over other people.

Do I have a right to that belief?

At the same time, you have a right to try to persuade me that I am wrong.

That depends entirely upon where you draw the line between ‘challenge’ and ‘harrassment.’ Some people consider handing out anti-pamphlets at funerals, demonstrating in front of churches, Temples and cathedrals to be ‘challenging.’ I don’t. Part of the right to worship, I think, is the right to live one’s faith and to attend one’s meetings without being harrassed and mocked.

I know, odd of me, but there it is.

What you believe is not at issue. It’s what you do about it that is.

Well, here’s the thing: you are begging a rather big question there, m’friend. There are a great many people who believe rather firmly that Joseph Smith, far from being a charlatan, was a prophet. Now the fact that many people believe this doesn’t prove that it is true–I’m quite aware of that.

However, the fact that many people DO believe that he was a very real prophet really messes with your assumption that everybody knows he was a charlatan–or that he is a ‘proven liar and charlatan.’ This has not been proven.

YOU may agree with the side that calls him a charlatan, but that doesn’t prove that he was one.

You could be wrong.

Here’s your problem.

Joseph Smith claimed to be able to read the Kinderhook plates, which were bogus forgeries meant to fool him.

Joseph Smith had sex with the wives of other men.

Do you deny either of these points?

Perhaps the test Kinderhook plates were not bogus, just that agents of satan said they were. Thus spreading this misinformation about Joseph Smith.Makes the brain spin eh.

ha no. The agents of Satan made the kinderhook plates, buried them, and created the ruse of digging the “ancient” plates out of the ground. Smith proceeded to “translate” the forgery. oops.
