Some may disagree, and it will be great to hear from you. I propose that all forum members change their profile, if Catholic, from Roman Catholic to just “Catholic.” As the one true church, Roman Catholic denotes a “denomination.” Denominations started with the protestants, or some could argue, when the Church split in the east in 1100 or so. Please all, change your profiles to “Catholic,” not “Roman Catholic.” Ok, I’m picky on this issue; but being a Catholic / Christian apologist in discussions with Protestants throughout my life, this is an important Catholic evangelical point.

:blessyou:

Well, Roman Catholic means you belong to the Roman Church. Its a sui juris, or a Patriarchate, however you want to call it. It identifies one’s canonical membership as well as the traditions one would adhere to as opposed to a Ukrainian Catholic, Melkite, Chaldean, Maronite, etc.

Interesting point but as a Catholic Christian apologist you should recognize as already pointed out that there are different “rites” within the Church, Stating that one is “Roman Catholic” merely points to the specific “rite”, in this case the Latin Rite…

Plus, I have seen those who are NOT in communion with Rome identify themselves as catholic here (in the sense that they are members of the universal body of Christ). So I actually see our more specific identification as being helpful in that we are pointing, through our tradition to the Holy See.

James

But then again, many parish churches use the term Roman Catholic, and sometimes the Holy See itself uses this term.

I call Melkite Catholics “Melkite Catholic”, and Ukranian Catholics “Ukranian Catholic”, so why not call Roman Catholics “Roman Catholic”? Perhaps it would be more correct to say “Latin Catholic”, but it’s less clear, especially given the large number of Latino Catholics today. Anyway, “Roman Catholic” has a really awesome ring to it… 😃

I don’t get too hung up on this, but it is important to let our less knowledgeable brethren know that Roman Catholic and Catholic are not really synonymous.

Mine said Catholic, but I do think it’s worthwhile to point out the rite… so I’ve changed mine to “Catholic (Latin Rite).” I think that’s a good compromise, and I would encourage others to do the same.

After all, we are Catholics first, and then Latin/Melkite/Maronite/etc. second.

God bless you :).

I too use Latin Rite Catholic and understand the point. It is true that many who speak uncharitably of the Mother Church will often stick the word “Roman” in there to draw attention to that perceived evil thing called the Vatican and the Papacy. So, I have also corrected folks and said that it is properly referred to as the Catholic Church, with 23 different sui juris churches comprising the worldwide Catholic Church. I believe there are at least 10 different Rites in the Church as well of which the largest is the Latin Rite. At any rate, I can appreciate the APB on this topic. Shalom!

I like that. Let me think about it a bit. I may change mine, too:)

[Looks for the button to change his profile to ROMAN Catholic]

RRRRRROOOOMMMMAN Catholic.

Rolls right off the tongue. 😃

After 40+ years of false ecumenism, why should I change what I am called so as avoid any possibility of offending non-Catholics? 🤷

Stand tall, ye Romans!

Tip to the OP: Try a change of tack. When you are asked what religion you are, state you are ROMAN Catholic, why their beliefs are wrong and why ours are right. Be forthright. I don’t think ‘finessing’ every truly converted anyone. People appreciate directness.

Sorry, but there ARE churches that call themselves “Catholic” that are not in communion with Rome. :sad_yes:

Here is the WIKIPEDIA page devoted to these Catholic Churches not in communion with Rome
