All protestant eyes on Israel

Don’t ask me how I get into these conversations. They always seem to come my way. Aargh!

A protestant friend told me that end times are near. Everyone is watching Israel. She said that something about Israel in the bible pertains to end times. This is not the first time I hear this. I have heard this from other protestants. What art they talking about.

My little Catholic self simply told her that we have been living in end times for 2,000 years now and that I live my life well for Christ, but that I was not anticipating the “end of the world” at any near time. I also stated that only the father knows when the end is. She excused herself to go to the bathroom.

This has been going on in the protestant community for years and years now. I can remember reading The Last Days of the Late Great Planet Earth by Hal ? back in 1971. It all seemed so convincing. Except, guess what? The time passed when it all was to come about. This all has to do with revelation prophecy (Book of Revelations) as the protestants interpret it. I have read several Catholic interpretations on this Book and it is pretty clear to me that they were talking about what was going on back then about 100 AD. Jesus Himself says that no one knows the hour of the end except the Father. That’s good enough for me.

I think think there are several passages in the Bible people use as evidence of the gathering of nations against Israel as a sign of the end times. Actually, if you google it, I’m sure you’ll come up with tons of stuff, but the only reference I can find/think of right now is Zechariah chapter 14.

You’re absolutely right that only the Father knows exactly when the end is, though. After all, Jesus tells us:

“But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father (Matthew 24: 36 NRSV).”
 
Israel ceased to exist as a nation in 70 AD and didn’t become a nation again until 1948. The nations could hardly gather against a nation that didn’t exist. My own opinion is that the modern State of Israel has exactly nothing to do with the end times.

I am totally ignorant on this issue and would like to learn more in the event conversations like this should arise again.

This friend was once Catholic and is going to some wacky fly by night church. I pray she comes back home.
 
I read (I think it was from Peter Kreeft) that the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple was a sign of the end of the world - within a generation. He was not prophesying, he was saying there are some people that make this claim - I don’t know the basis of their claim. Mr. Kreeft went on to muse that there are proposals in the Israeli government to again build the temple.

To rebuild the Temple would require demolishing the Dome of the Rock which would ignite WWIII. I don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon.

A biblical generation is 40 years, but that time has already gone by. If Israel becoming a state again were the criteria, the 2nd Coming should have happen by 1988. Clearly it didn’t, which is why all those who used this for a guide for the end times had to scrap the books they’d written on the subject and begin “guessing” all over again. Because truly, in the end, all they are doing is ripping verse out of context and speculating to get people into their sects, all excited, and keep them in line. Mine is the voice of experience.
