The priest whose homily I heard had a good message. He mentiomed how sometimes people come to him and say, “I could never be a saint. I’m to angry/selfish/greedy/ect.” And so he emphasized that a saint is not someone who never sinned. It’s someone who, as in the Revelations reading, survived the time of great distress. And that voice saying we could never ne a saint us a voice from hell. That we should not listen to that voice.

I’m curious about homilies you may have heard.

The normative use of the word saint in the Bible is in reference to the community of believers. You see it in Chronicles when Solomon dedicates the temple, you see it throughout the Psalms where the Psalmist is exhorting the assembly of believers to worship God, you see it in Daniel where he addresses faithful believers who remain steadfast in God despite persecution, and you see it throughout the Gospels, Acts, and the Epistles, where the community of believers in Christ are the saints. If you want to be a saint, its easy. Place your faith in the Jesus Christ and in the grace freely given for his sake.

Our priest asked who among us wanted to become a saint, and suggested that every morning we should ask God what he wants us to do today to work toward becoming a saint. He also spoke about how the Beattitudes tell us how to become saints.

Our priest talked about the Communion of Saints and how we on Earth are connected to the saints in Heaven and the souls in Purgatory.
