Looking through the Sacramentary I see that there is a Mass for All Saints on November the 1st but also a Votive Mass for All Saints. The prayer over the gifts is the same on both and so is the communion rite but the opening and closing prayers are different, also the Mass in the calendar has a Solemn Blessing. Which do you think should be used?

On the solemnity of All Saints celebrated on 1st November (or this year in those places where it is transferred to the Sunday, 31st October) the proper Mass for the Solemnity of All Saints must be used.

On any other day, on which votive Masses are permitted, the votive Mass for all Saints may be used.

I’ve just come back from the Saturday evening Mass in my parish, it was the Mass of the feast, not the Votive Mass.

First, please forgive me for what must appear to be nitpicking. You’ve just come back for Sunday Mass.

Please forgive me for what must appear to be nitpicking. He’s just come back from Sunday Mass.

But, actually, it was Saturday evening after all. So he was right. Or else you might as well tell a person who says he went to “10 AM Mass,” “No, it was Sunday Mass; there was nothing defining about the time at which it was held.”

Come on, he’s telling us the day and time.

Which is precisely what he said: “the Saturday evening Mass in my parish, it was the Mass of the feast.”

But you’re forgiven, of course. 🙂
