Today I attended a Funeral Mass for a friend in our newly renovated Diocesan Cathedral! I thought they did a great job until…lo and behold, there above the Tabernacle was the replica of the “all seeing eye” as depicted on the back of a dollar bill! My research places this symbol within Masonic and Rosicrucian practices and tradition! Where does it fit in the history of Catholocism? What is your opinion?

You are correct when you say that the all seeing eye has been used and is used in gnostic circles. However they did not started it and they are not the only one using that symbol. It is like the church of Scientology using the cross as a symbol at the entrance of their buildings.

The all seeing eye is a symbol that implies an all knowing divinity, and that is one of the characteristics of God.

This topic was previously discussed thoroughly in a thread here. It looks like the thread might have vanished, but you can at least read the Google cache of it here (page 1) and here (page 2).

I appreciate the references to past usage. I question the reusing of this symbol at this time! Especially, since our churches have been ravaged of almost all symbolism, (art and paintings to mention a few). In this day and age I can only relate to it as a symbol connected with Masonry…a cult despite it’s origin in church history.

This is my first post on this forum and I am not a Roman Catholic… yet. I am seriously considering it. That being said, two Sundays ago I was in a United Methodist Church and they also had the Eye of Providence hanging on the altar. Being that I also was familiar with it as a Masonic/Luciferian symbol, I was very shocked and uncomfortable.

However I have done more research on it and I am confident in that it was hijacked and it was originally a thoroughly Christian symbol representing our God. Just because the symbol maybe used by others for who knows what… doesn’t mean Christians need to abandon it. A perfect example which was shown on those archived threads is the up-side-down cross. You know how many occultists/satanists use that? Should the Pope then cover all instances and pretend it isn’t there?

I have learned to simply accept the symbol and not just automatically think the worst when I see a symbol like that.

It was originally a Catholic symbol.

And I contend that it has been totally compromised!
Totally? That is a very strong statement. The Catholic Church is universal and I bet that most of the people outside the USA do not even know that masons use it as a symbol. I also wonder how many people within the USA see it only as a masonic symbol.

erhaps over stated! My point is that I have not seen it in any churches. As to Americans seeing it as a Masonic symbol, I wonder how many can name the Ten Commandments but that’s another issue. I appreciate the references and agree that it was a historical (?) christian symbol. It’s just strange to me in this age of a modernist church that this symbol is revived. But we can leave it there! I appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut. 👍

Thanks for the references. They bring an awakening to things I have read and heard but forgotten.:o

Here is a picture from an Orthodox monastery on Mt Athos

The triangle represents the Holy trinity and the eye that God is all-seeing
Paul, where did you come up with this web-site? I looked at more than just the one picture, and I found It’s extremely anti-Catholic.

It was as bad as the “whore of Babylon” and Chick tracts, which were included amoung all the pictures on the site.

It reminded me much of the Book “Catholicism Agianst Itself” that I came across years ago while I was under parental duress in an extreme fundamentalist church.

Im quite saddened for the mere fact that I know people that think this symbol is of Satanic origin. It is quite sad really.

Do not worry about, the symbol is perfectly Christian.

Check out Dirts post. First I did not say it was Satanic as such. However the “eye” was used by Egyptians. It was “adopted” by Medieval Christians in their iconography(?). I made the original post to learn and I am doing that.

With due respect, does it really matter who came up with it?

Eyes are quite ubiquitous, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the “All Seeing Eye” arose independently in various cultures.
