All Souls Day Missa Cantata in the Dominican Rite at St Catherine of Siena, NY, NY

There will be an All Souls Day Missa Cantata in the Dominican Rite on Friday, November 2 at 7 PM, at St Catherine of Siena, New York, NY. The flyer is attached.

Some information about the rite:

The Dominican Rite is the unique rite of the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Church. It has been classified differently by different sources - some consider it a usage of the Roman Rite, others a variant of the Gallican Rite, and still others a form of the Roman Rite into which Gallican elements were inserted.[1]

The Dominican Order composed and adopted this rite in the mid-thirteenth century as its specific rite. In 1968, it decided to adopt the renewed Roman Rite of Mass and of the Liturgy of the Hours, as soon as the texts revised after the Second Vatican Council appeared, but it has kept other elements of its proper rite, such as the Rite of Profession.[2]

As a result, the Dominican Rite of the Mass ceased being celebrated after the renewed Roman Rite was promulgated. However, in recent decades it has been celebrated occasionally in some provinces of the Dominican Order. In addition, it is celebrated by the Traditionalist Roman Catholic Dominican Fraternity of St. Vincent Ferrer.

You’d think there would be even MORE reason to have the mass!
It would provide people with a place to memorialize those who perished in the storm, and celebrate the lives that were saved!
now, I can understand canceling any of the surrounding festivities (if there was a lunch/dinner planned) but not taking time to worship our Lord and Savior in the most holy sacrafice of the mass?? Why not?

I pray that those in the Atlantic NE are doing ok. My prayers are with you as you attempt to clean up and get back to a normal life!

I wasn’t clear. The Dominican sung Mass, that was advertised, has been canceled.

There will still be a Mass for All Souls Day in the Ordinary Form.

The sentiments are all lovely, and I don’t disagree, but unfortunately we have a serious transportation issue. Were they to hold the Dominican Rite Mass as scheduled, I’d venture maybe 10 people (if that many) would show up. Not due to lack of interest, but due to plain old logistics.

I just realized you’re in NYC. How goes it by you? I’m going to try to make it into the City tomorrow from Brooklyn with those new Brooklyn shuttle buses they’re supposed to provide tomorrow. I have no idea where they are dropping us off!

Good question. I’m actually out of town at the moment, and I’ve no idea what the interim transit plans are. Whenever the MTA uses “shuttle buses” it rarely if ever goes well. Let us know how you fare.

Yeah I know. During the blizzard of 2010, it took me 4 hours to get to work and 4 hours to get back. People were practically fighting for a spot on the bus. Was a nightmare. But they’re supposed to have over 300 buses. We shall see.

Driving apparently takes forever especially since a lot of areas have no power, and so, no traffic lights. A newscaster timed how long it took for her to drive one block and it took 7 minutes.

I’ll report back.

And I thought Seattle traffic was bad… I sort of feel like, well, probably like a wimp. here I am moaning and groaning over 2 1/2 hours to a Mass (120 miles). I’d never last back in NYC.

It took four hours because buses and trains were suspended. I’m happy to report service service on most trains have been resumed, although of course there are issues here and there. I’m just happy that I can ride the train into Manhattan again.

I wish St Catherine had rescheduled their Missa Cantata.

Our All Souls Day Traditional Latin Mass was beautiful and the choir was wonderful also. Our pastor wore vestments that are from our parish archives.
