Just a few questions. Having a missa cantata on All Souls, the celebrant is new to the EF and is quite busy, so I am more-or-less planning it.

Would you use all of the following, or are some omitted due to the somber mood?
  • Incence (I know it’s used after Mass at the catafalque. would it be used at the begining, gospel, offertory, and canon?)
  • Candles at procession, gospel, canon, recession
  • Any of the small ceremonial actions?

Incense is used at the only at the Offertory, consecration and absolution at the catafalque; the gifts, cross and altar are incensed by the priest; the MC incenses the celebrant after which the thurible is set aside until the thurifer incenses the Blessed Sacrament at the consecration

There are no candles at the procession; no liturgical objects are carried at the procession; at the gospel the acolytes may stand where they normally stand at the gospel but without candles;

During the Mass there are no blessings except for the blessing of incense; no osculations (kisses) occur either; The priest will say the prayer over the water (Deus qui humanae substantiae…) but no blessing.

Do a search on sanctamissa.org for a Requiem Mass. The rubrics should be there. Its not up to us to “invent” cutsie stuff to make thing “nice”. Just follow the rubrics and things will be fine.

You might also want to check out the DVD put out by ICRSS. They celebrated a Solemn High Requiem Mass on All Souls Day 2008.

Jesus, God and man,
imprisoned by love in Thy most holy Sacrament,
have mercy upon us.

Tú y yo sabemos por la fe que oculto en las especies sacramentales está Cristo,
ese Cristo con su Cuerpo, con su Sangre, con su Alma, y con su Divinidad,
prisonero de amor.

… Our Lord Himself frequently said; and it is recorded as an Apostolic tradition from Him
by St. Justin the Martyr. He says ‘Jesus often said, “They who are near Me are near a fire”’.
