Hmmm… Okay, I’m a curious Anglican.

Curious in the way that I like learning more about other faiths and how those whom practice that faith feel about it… hence why I’m asking annoying questions about the catholic faith too. I firmly believe that they key to respect is understanding… so that’s what I lead through out my life really.

Anyway, I got a flier through my door not so long ago that claimed if I sent away for my FREE book I COULD be given all the answers, and that it can forsee all nuclear tensions, terrorism and where it is leading to.

Well I don’t buy into that. But I did send away for the free book, mainly because I wanted to hear from their perspective.

BUT it arrived today, and something about it kind of makes my stomach turn. It feels like one big promotional scam on God.

It says in the bible, “those who humble themselves shall be exalted, and those who exalt themselves shall be humbled”, and these people don’t seem to be terribly humble. They are spreading some kind of word about God, but it all seems, just wrong!

The book is called “The Great Controversy” by E. G. White and is written from a Seventh Day Adventist (branch of the Protestant Denomination) perspective. The organisation that sent it: www.adventbooks.org .

I cant decide whether I should read it or not?
Has anyone else read it?
What were your conclusions?

Peace and Love,

E.G. White is Ellen Gould White, who help found the Sabbatarian Adventist movement (which later became the Seventh Day Adventists) in the 1860s. She claimed to be a prophet and many within the cult still refer to her as such. You can learn more about the SDA cult here. Incidently, I would toss the book. God bless.

Hmmm… I must admit I think the book will be lying dusty on my shelves for a considerable amount of time. I had flicked through the wikipedia article, but even found that a bit weird.

Do you not reckon we’d all be mightily miserable if we knew all the answers? And besides, in Genesis, God did not want us to have a greater knowledges of him, hence the forbidden fruit. Do you reckon thats got lost somewhere in their process of thinking?

sighs

Thanks for your reply

I don’t really reckon one way or the other on the subject since it is not possible for man to know all the answers. I worry about those things that I can grasp and let God take care of those things outside my grasp.

White and the organization that she helped established are “lost” when it comes to many things. God bless.

Good point. I think pretty much the same one about worrying about the things that we can grasp… cos it’s also a case of, if we are meant to grasp it, we will in time.

And hmmm… I think we could all say that about each others religions, because the whole point we choose to follow a religion is that we firmly believe in it… and if we believe in another, then we’d follow the other. But then again, I’ve never encountered so much reluctance when addressing another faith until those fliers!

Seventh Day Adventist are not a cult. The Catholic Church and most other mainstream religions agree that they are a Christian sect.

To find out more about them and thier beliefs, I would check out
Dies Domini or SDA2RC.com. They are Catholic converts from SDA and give a fair assesment of the SDA religion.

I suppose that would depend how you defined cult. I use Webster’s (specifically the 3rd definition down) which says:

1: formal religious veneration : worship
2: a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3: a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4: a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator
5: a great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b: the object of such devotion c: a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion

Some of the reasons why I believe the SDA to be a “cult” are based on their beliefs:
  1. Holistic human nature (fundamental beliefs 7, 26) - Humans are an indivisible unity of body, mind and spirit. They do not possess an immortal soul, and death is an unconscious sleep (commonly known as “soul sleep”).
  2. Conditional immortality (fundamental belief 27) - The wicked will not suffer eternal torment in hell, but instead will be permanently destroyed.
  3. Heavenly sanctuary (fundamental belief 24) - At his ascension, Jesus Christ commenced an atoning ministry in the heavenly sanctuary. In 1844, he began to cleanse the heavenly sanctuary in fulfillment of the Day of Atonement.
  4. Investigative Judgment (fundamental belief 24) - A judgment of professed Christians began in 1844, in which the books of record are examined for all the universe to see. The investigative judgment will affirm who is worthy of salvation, and vindicate God as just in His dealings with mankind.
Then there is Ellen White herself, whose still regarded as a prophet with her writings being second only to the Bible. She says this about the Catholic Church:
40.png
White:
God’s word has given warning of the impending danger; let this be unheeded, and the Protestant world will learn what the purposes of Rome really are, only when it is too late to escape the snare. She is silently growing into power. Her doctrines are exerting their influence in legislative halls, in the churches, and in the hearts of men. She is piling up her lofty and massive structures in the secret recesses of which her former persecutions will be repeated. Stealthily and unsuspectedly she is strengthening her forces to further her own ends when the time shall come for her to strike. All that she desires is vantage ground, and this is already being given her. We shall soon see and shall feel what the purpose of the Roman element is. Whoever shall believe and obey the word of God will thereby incur reproach and persecution.
White and the SDAs view the Catholic Church as a cult and refer to the Pope as an anti-Christ.

Then there was the early belief that Christ had a sinful nature while on earth. Admittedly, most SDAs today no longer support that teaching but it still resides in the history of the organization as well as in the hearts of some of the more “historic Adventists.”

So, perhaps there are some who would not call this organization a cult; however, I am not one of them. And while I can respect that you may not agree with me on this issue, I hope that you can at least somewhat understand why I feel the way I do. God bless.

seventh day adventists would probably no longer be considered a cult. i get the feeling you are using it in a derogatory way also. if you look up the definition of “cult”, the catholic church could easily fall under the term as well. lets be civil. if your intent was not deragatory, i apologize.

whoops, i guess i should have read further before opening my big mouth!!

I read that book because I had read somewhere it was a Christian classic. It made me uneasy. Its author wasnt named on the edition I had, nor the publishing company nor its affiliation. It had lots of anti-catholic statements and I put it down (this is a while befor I got interested in the Catholic Church) thiking, that does it, if all that is true I won’t want anything to do with the Catholic Church…and then I thought, but how do I know that’s all true? It was written in a factual tone, but then a lot of propaganda is, so Ichecked it out. When I learned it was an SDA book, I threw it away. I already knew the SDA was very undiplomatic toward other traditions. I looked for the real story on some of these “facts” and that’s part of what led me here.
