I have a feeling that will *definitely *be helpful to you in your pursuit of a family!👍

Which one?
I wasn’t aware that it’s possible to have more than one last name. I’m not talking about two or more words composing the last name, mind you, which isn’t the same thing. Anyway, the bottom line is whatever word/words you put in the “last name” field on paperwork, what is it that’s keeping you from just using that?

I’m 43 and never been on an “official” date. So don’t worry about it. They say there’s someone for everyone. I don’t believe that. Some people stay single all their lives. I guess it’s a vocation.
Well said 👍 I’m 52 & the longest I dated a guy was 2 weeks  I agree being single is a vocation for some of us 🙂

Btw, I’m still laughing at the pig jumping the shark :rotfl:

For the record, you might want to expand your network of contacts, social exposure and the like. God helps those who help themselves and supernatural interventions are unlikely where natural means (aka brains, and action) would suffice. Might be time to cast your net.
Nah, I’ve cast the net a lot, and the last time I did so, things wound up heading south in a severe way. Three years later, I’m only just now feeling better about life and living, so I’m not willing to just repeat the same mistake again.

I don’t enjoy a number of the social venues that are out there right now, either…bars, clubs and dancing are not my idea of a good time; I also quickly discovered that online dating made me feel awful…like a product, and not a person.

All this may sound like sour grapes, but it’s not. I’m just not worried about it. I figure that the relatively quiet situation I’m in, socially speaking, won’t last forever. My oldest sister just got engaged for the first time at 45, and she’s been to dance classes and other social things for years; it just took the right person. I’ve been meeting new people in my hobbies recently, and I volunteer for a number of functions in the small city I live it, so I’ve got the “new people” part covered. It’ll happen when it’ll happen.

Thank you, though, for your advice.

I don’t really have a strong right to any of the surnames that were an option, neither am I particularly attached to any of them. I wouldn’t be continuing any specific family for that matter, either. Being the odd one, I’d basically be starting my own, if at all. I had to put something on paper, so I made a decision, as bad as any, but I almost appealed the administrative order that okayed my motion when I changed mind a whole two weeks after, being 19 of age at the time. This is a most stressful matter that I live better when I forget. If I were a cleric, referred as Father Firstname like our local custom has it, I’d probably forget about having anything past the first. It’s a double-barrel, which means if a woman wanted to hyphenate, I would need to pick one, and I’d feel really bad putting a double-barrel on any kids, not to mention that it would be two from my ancestry and none from the wife’s (two is the limit in this jurisdiction, and two is already silly, much more so three). I thought about buying a place and naming myself after it but that would look like usurping some rights that no herald in his right mind would recognise me as having, due to two consecutive illegitimate births up the tree (which somehow voids your lineage). I couldn’t possibly figure my way out of the mess and the last woman to hear part of the story had enough pretty soon, too. I met just about one that didn’t mind but she was in a similar situation, so no wonder. I’m questioning whether I really should inflict a continuation of this on any children I might have.

I see. Well, I had a similar moment a while ago but then financial difficulties kicked in and then more of them, so it’s really gonna be hard work and no pampering myself any foreseeable future. Just hope it’ll be enough to pay all the bills and other stuff.

Personally, I have compunctions about dancing because as a could-have-been archaelogist (a life-time interest in antiquity and further ancient times) I’ve had a brush with, shall we say, some anthropological issues and I can easily notice associations with fertility or supposed bedroom prowess in modern dancing steps and figures. I can’t claim ignorance of what all that hip shaking and putting legs in between someone’s legs is about. Not crude sex, mind you, but the sensuality isn’t overly subtle, either. It’s attractive and addicting, which is possibly what drives people to it and what drove me too but at some point you can’t continue to pretend you don’t notice, especially with the comments people make about the sex-appeal, eroticism etc. Prevented me from being a particularly good dancer, too. Otherwise I might not quite have been bad.

As for dating sites, it was similar for me, except I felt as if I was browsing others like products on the shelf, not really being a product myself. I can’t summarise my personality for the life of me but I sure as heck am not “selling myself” in that writing, it’s not detrimental to my sense of dignity.

Uhh… yeah. :ouch:

Just give them the wife’s name then.

Personally if my parents had left me with some double-barrelled or hyphenated name I would just chop half of it off and be done with it.

Thanks for understanding. Only gave you the tip of the iceberg anyway.

That’d be unmanly. I’d do it without fussing if she came from a dying family with no males to continue it, but otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get myself to do it. It’d be like going to a beautician or wearing a purse. Or cleaning your desk. Or changing your socks daily. Or something equally emasculating.

What my parents wanted (each of them, that is) was a yet different cup of fish.

October Baby, I’m only a year younger than you, a man
and never married, and we are in the same boat, except
for one thing:

What do you have against Deborah from Everybody Loves Raymond ?
Seriously, I think she puts up with a lot of BS on Ray and his mother’s part.
Now, Carrie from King of Queens, she’s a real smart alek, it would be a
challenge to get a hold of that one. lol.

Here’s mine off top of my head:

**Green: **
Deep thinker
Predictable
Doesn’t always have to laugh to smile inside
God fearing
Empathic
No serious promiscuity in her past
Not materialistic

Red:
Been with too many men / would be with another woman
Garrulous
Gossipy
Sweats the small stuff
Too outgoing
Too career-oriented
Unwilling to accept my own flaws. lol.
both Debra and Carrie are bossy and castrating and Carrie is physically abusive. :blackeye:

I don’t think it could be much more emasculating than all this melodramatic indecisiveness. It’s just a name for crying out loud.

If you don’t like your name, then just change it. Go down to the court house and fill out the necessary papers. That is much better than fretting about how your name is a curse. If you choose not to change it, then be happy with it. Above all, don’t be a martyr.

I find this fascinating.

(Cleaning one’s desk? Really? :ehh:)

Thank you for this wonderful thread to participate!

I am separated (7 years) and if I become involved with any man again ‘to marry’ these are the ‘musts’ with both of us;

Green Flags

A man walking in Jesus’ footsteps to the best of his ability.

Green Flags

A man not following any of Satan’s ways and if he does, being truly remorseful at the time and attending Reconciliation.

After a 20 year marriage and now in my forties, Jesus sustains me and your wonderful thread has just enlightened me to the fact that I do not want to share my life with another man giving 120 per cent of the time anymore.

I wish to carry out Jesus’ and Our Lady Mary’s callings.

I’m not trying to be mean lol,
That was a bit hard to tell, you know. 😛
I just honestly can’t understand how this is a problem.
That’s because you’re American and you guys have created a civilisation wonderfully free of such stuff (other than maybe a couple of immigrants before they assimilate).
I find this fascinating.

:rotfl:
You’d better watch out! It leads to headache!
(Cleaning one’s desk? Really? :ehh:)
Well, we can negotiate the inclusion of that. I knew changing socks daily would be an uncontroversial part!

Oh okay, sorry. If you’d just stated it was cultural differences from the beginning that would have explained it. :o

No worries, it’s all right! Besides, I’m admittedly a bit of a primadonna when it comes to that issue.
Tell that to my barber who says these are my last couple of years with a full head of hair. There’s a good chance I’m older than you are if you mention Hogwarts in your profile. 😛
