All these DH DD abbrevations - getting old?

LOL.

I cann’t bring myself to say “dear son”, now if I had a daughter, that’s fine. I don’t care if he’s my son, but men shouldn’t be going around calling one another “dear”.

LOL, you’re from the wrong part of the country. When we moved our East our first apartment manager called everyone dear.

As far as “son” and “ds” I can tell you that when you are with only one hand (because your ds is sitting on your lap) it is much faster to type “ds” than “son” because of the placement of the letters on the key board.

That’s a good point.

The way I look at it, any place you go will have its own lingo with its own learning curve. If you start studying an academic discipline, you come across an entirely new vocabulary, and often words that will be used in ways different from how they are used in other contexts.

The internet is no different. And, as hannajomar pointed out, it can even vary from messageboard to messageboard. Try going to a forum for a band and you will see every album they have ever released and every song they have ever sung turned into an acronym. It’s just the lingo of the medium.

So I don’t know, since she includes classics like LOL, if she made up the DH, SAHM, etc. or if those were pre-existing as well. Possibly revealing my internet ignorance here.

They certainly seem to be “a chick thing” - I’ve never seen a man type DW for “Dear Wife”! Maybe he would type “TM” - for “The Missus” ? :hug1:

What throws me are the unfamiliar acronyms that are actual words. If I saw someone use STUFF, I would wonder why the poster is “shouting” the word “stuff” at me.

I think for me it’s the "mommy cliche’ " aspect of the DH, DD ones that kind of get to me, and I’ll admit my annoyance could be because I’m outside that whole area of life. It’s like people who have yet to have children saying “I won’t do THAT when I have kids of MY own, it’s (bad parenting/silly/whatever).” Or “You won’t catch ME driving a minivan/being a soccer mom/etc.” I tend to wonder if I had had children if I would’ve been able to avoid being a cliche’ - yet without being too overbearing about not being a cliche’! I think the DH/DD/DS abbrevations are somehow in my mind associated with how I wouldn’t want to be if I had been a mom.

I know, I’m putting a lot of baggage on some letters. And it’s kind of stupid. At the same time, I’m having fun seeing everyone’s responses. Like I said, feel free to throw cyber-tomatoes at me.

Yes, it was a post in what looked like Vietnamese, which has now been deleted, making it look like I reported the “breast milk in the fridge” post . Next time I’ll avoid the confusion by just reporting the spam without saying anything about it.

I associate them with varous mom’s websites, and find them too modern and girly, no offense intended.

I think it is the “dear” part that bugs me. Half the posts you see are along the lines of “DH is such a jerk!”

Then why did you call him dear? JH makes more sense.

I say get rid of them.

I have no problem when people have a legitimate reason to use them, such as having a child in your lap. However, I know of people that are my age who just use them because it, quote, “Takes too long to write the real word.” That’s the kind of laziness I’m complaining about, not the use of acronyms period.

If you were to write the word out it would be properly preceded by a “my.” You would say: “My wife went to the store the other day.” Among people you know you would use her name instead of her title (wife). You would say" Nancy went to the store the other day." When an acronym is employed it can be used as a substitute for the name rather than the title, and allows us to say: “DW went to the stare the other day.” Thus not only is it saving space and time, but it also helps to avoid redundancy in our writing. If you are telling a family story you end up repeating “my wife” over and over again. Because I bet you guys who don’t like the acronyms would ever use the phrase: “Wife went to the store the other day.”

You could just as easily say “My wife went to the store”. Plus, saying “DW” over and over again is redundant. You do not have to say “My wife” over and over again. Rather, you could say that first to establish who you are speaking about, and then say “She” from then on.
