All these DH DD abbrevations - getting old?

People started using these in the 80’s when there were bulletin boards that folks could log into and leave messages. That was before AOL, and even before PC Online!
Back in those days we paid by the minute most of the time to be online, and many of the acronyms were used to cut the time that it took to type words in such as:
BRB (be right back), OMG (oh my goodness), LOL (laugh out loud), ROFLOL (rolling on floor laughing out loud), DW (dear wife), DD (dear daughter), DH (dear husband) and so forth.
There are hundreds and hundreds of these things and they’ve been around for many years, and I don’t see them going away any time soon. They’ve become a part of message boards and emailing and most recently, texting.

If you don’t like them, then by all means, don’t use them. I like them ok, and I use them.
I don’t think it has much to do with how fast one can key, I key about 120-135 wpm and still use them. 🙂
 
I like most Internet acronyms except for the ones that are offensive by being vulgar or racist or blasphemous or something like that.

The “Dear (Whoever)” subset, though, has a quality that is not bad in the same way as what I described above. But I guess I’d call the quality “cloying.” 🤷

I don’t think calling a husband “Dear” or a child “Dear” is sickeningly sweet.
Now if I posted about my “darling, sweet, loveable, precious husband,” that would be sickeningly sweet and way over the top! But Dear? I think a lot of Moms call their children dear or sweetie or love, and the same thing with a spouse. How is that cloying?

I think it is the “dear” part that bugs me. Half the posts you see are along the lines of “DH is such a jerk!”

Then why did you call him dear? JH makes more sense.

LOL remember* Lady and the Tramp*, where Lady thinks her owners’ names are “Jim Dear” and “Darling” because that is what they call each other.

I think ‘dear wife’ is sickeningly sweet. Makes me want to throw up a little bit.

I don’t say ‘dear wife’ or ‘dear daughter’ in normal conversation. No reason to use that on the internet.

I don’t see how “dear” is “sickeningly sweet”. That’s how we address letters to people we hardly know. 😛
 
I have gotten use to them. The only thing is sometimes I have no idea what it means. For a long time I would see OP and :confused: had no idea what it meant. Than one time I wrote the original post :newidea: It was clear to me what it meant. Duh!

OP means Ocean Pacific.

TS means the poster writes like TS Eliot.

DH is designated hitter.

DW is designated wetter, used to refer to the kid you know will wet the bed while on vacation.

DS is a handheld system made by Nintendo.

DD is best left undiscussed on these boards.

This is why it seems a bit cloying. IMO, it’s something that started off cute but kind of got old. People have a right to use them, and I’ll roll my eyes silently :rolleyes:
 
These acronyms are really annoying to me, especially since one of them is my initials. 🙂
 
Apologies (sort of) for dredging up this thread, but now there are Catholic abbreviations that I was stumped by - just curious whether they’re common and I’m ignorant, or everybody’s just loving to abbreviate more and more stuff! :confused:

DL - it was Divine Liturgy
SD - Spiritual Director

I’d just never seen these before. 🤷

Oh, and recently I did see a guy put DW for “Dear Wife” - surprised me! 😉
 
I could understand the use of “dear” every now and then if a person really wanted to convey their affection for their loved one. But abbreviating it completely defeats that purpose, and doubly so when it’s used every time. So my vote is no - not a fan.
 
I dislike them rather intensely. I do consider my husband to be my “darling”, but I will take the time to write that out.

However, I am also curmudgeon enough to dislike internet abbreviations in general, and I never use them, not even when texting on my phone. :rolleyes:
 
Im always having to google these acronyms. Then there’s the issue of what if your “DH” isn’t very “D”? Guess that sounds bad, but sometimes…

:rotfl: No, it just sounds realistic - even the D-est H has an off day now and then!
 
Even – or, rather, especially – on an off day, my W is just as D.
 
I think they can cause loads of confusion. So often in a thread that uses an acronym you get someone asking “What is **?” Sometimes the time taken to work out what is meant is a nuisance, and then you hope you got it right.

What about if you’re having a rant about your husband/wife - do you still call them DH or DW. On the other hand, that may be a good time to have “dear” in the name, just to remind you that this is your marriage partner you are talking about.

Then, is SIL sister-in-law, or son-in-law? And should I refer to my husband as my DDH (deceased dear husband)? And the grandchildren? It gets more and more involved and tricky, let’s go back to words.

I admit I don’t like “text-speak” and don’t use it myself, unless as a joke to my daughters who feel the same way as I do.
