Where does the money collected in the Alms box go? Does it stay at that parish, go to the diocese or what?

That’s a question for your local parish. That is a local decision at the parish level.

Either our alms boxes state where the money goes to, or our priest tells us. This year our Lenten alms are going to the Philippines relief efforts because a number of children in our parish Junior School have relatives affected by the disaster.

Our church’s “Poor Box” is given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They assist those struggling to survive with food, vouchers or help with rent or utility payments. They also provide a general accounting for where the funds were spent, and the Society publishes that in our Sunday Bulletin.

thanks everyone, i looked at our box today after Mass. it doesnt say what our parish does with the funds. i was just generally wondering if parishes were required to send it to the diocese or if each parish kept it for what they needed to use it for. sounds like the parishes make the decision.
i have no problems with it either way. if it all went to the diocese i would still contribute to it but would want to also contribute to some local area charity since some of our rural areas are quite poor.
