Already have committed mortal sins, can one become forgiven?

Say one has already numerously commited mortal sins, such as looking upon a woman lustfully or watching a film, (and aside from these actions lives a pretty sin free life) and has fully been aware of knowing it was a mortal sin, then matures spiritually and emotionally and regrets their actions and decisions and wishes to seek forgivness and leave those habits behind, will God forgive that person? Or has the damage been done and all the prayer and change of viewing life cannot change their outcome?
 
God will always forgive those who turn to Him and repent their sins, mortal or otherwise. Seek out confession, make an honest confession of as much as you can remember, and don’t worry if you forgot many specific details over time.

I will agree that Lusting for a woman is a grave matter, not so sure about the movie, depends on what it is.

Your comment about “matures spiritually” leads me to wonder if this person had Full Knowledge. If not, then the sin would be Venial (still a sin, just not mortal)

Consent seems to be there.

But to answer your question. Even if a person commits a mortal sin, if they have a change of heart, and ask for forgiveness, they will be forgiven. The key would be though, that they later had a true change of heart and were truly repentant of what they did, not just sorry they are going to hell, but truly sorry for having offended God. Obviously it is best to avoid Mortal Sin.

As long as there is life there is hope. As long as you live you can repent mortal sin, up to the very last moment, and you should do so as soon as you can and reconcile yourself to the Lord Jesus Christ who died for your sins, to bring to you salvation in Him.

Hate sin, love God, repell these desires from your life with disgust and sorrow, and then glory in their opposite, the purity and peace of the Lord.

A good confession, and a good prayer of sorrow and repentance to the Lord beforehand will begin your journey home. 🙂

He waits with open arms of forgiveness. 🙂

I recommend devotion to Mary and the Ave Maria as the foundation for acquiring a love of purity and the virtue thereof. 🙂
 
I will agree that Lusting for a woman is a grave matter, not so sure about the movie, depends on what it is.

Gimme a break. I lust over Penolope Cruz. This is going to have me keeping company with Stalin and Hitler for all eternity? Will I be chillin with Jeffry Dommer? I don’t think so.
The scrupulosity (sp?) of people on this forum blows my mind.

of course all sins can be forgiven if you are contrite, confess them and do penance. That is the whole point of why Christ became man, suffered, died, was buried and rose again. No permanent effects cannot be undone. For instance if a sexual sin resulted in a baby, that baby is not going to disappear because the parent confessed their part in the sin. If someone was murdered, the victim will not get up and walk because the killer went to confession. And yes, a persistent habit of sin is damaging, and it will take enormous grace to overcome that habit. Is it not fortunate, then, that the sacraments are such sources of extraordinary grace and strength. With each confession and return to communion we experience the healing grace of the Divine Mercy and grow less attached to the sin, and more to Christ.

Lust is a mortal sin. You have to hate it and love purity to go to Heaven.

This is not scrupulosity it’s a requirement for being in a state of grace.

I hope you learn that swiftly, it is very important that you be in one to go to Heaven – most people do not go there, it doesn’t take being an axe murderer to not go, it just takes being like the rest of the world, i.e. not different which is what a Christian -has to be- for Christ’s sake.

It has nothing to do with being scrupulous. It is a Church teaching.

Lust is a sin of grave matter. If you know the Church teaches that and go ahead and lust anyway you commit a mortal sin. If you die an in unrepented state of mortal sin then yes you do go to Hell.

CCC 2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.

Ummm…Jesus said that if a man lusts a woman in his heart, he has committed adultery with her.

Pretty sure Adultery is a mortal sin. Maybe you can claim this is like when Jesus said, if you eye causes you to sin, but it out. But I would rather be safe than sorry.

Also, looking a Penolope Cruz, and thinking “wow she is beautiful” is not lusting (at least I do not think it is), but thinking about doing physical acts to her or imagining you are having sex with her while you are having sex with your wife…yeah, pretty much what Jesus was saying.

Generally, if you’re going to overcome lust, you do have to give up looking at modern movie stars.
 
Confession, if genuine takes care of this problem my friend. Even if repeated, God’s mercy is great. My wife just bought me a book that holds the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska.

Good point. They are so fake anyways. Make-up or their photo’s are airbrushed. It is sad really.

I have started the practice of saying a Hail Mary when I start to have a lustful thought.

Whatever it takes… and it often takes more than we first realize… we give it up for God to gain purity. It is worth that much. 🙂
 
“By Grace you have been saved through Faith,” Paul writes in Ephesians. We are saved by grace, the love of God. Christ has won salvation for me by His life, death and resurrection. Am I better than Christ? Was his sacrifice not good enough? Do I need to atone for my own sins?

Indeed His sacrifice was to cleanse all the sins of all people. I can add nothing to it or take anything away. Now that I am a loved and forgiven child of God, I try to live my life to His glory and show some of His love to others around me. Do I still sin? Of course I do. But God’s forgiveness continues to shower down, and his love continues to strengthen me. When I fall, which I will, he will show me His love.

Is there a sin God won’t forgive? None at all?
Is that an excuse to sin all the more. Not at all… It is a reason to love all the more.
