While taking my priest to the Syracuse Symphony last month (he was an organ major in college) we got into a debate over which period of classical music we like. He likes the classical and romantic periods; I LOVE BAROQUE! I like all of the sudden blends of the: woodwinds, strings, harpsichord, and sometimes brass and the organ is included. Come on Baroque lovers, back me up here, Barouque has action and excitment, classical period music makes me want to take a nap.

Antonio Vivaldi wrote scads of music for choirs - except we seldom get to sing him. Go for Baroque!

I have grown to like Vivaldi and not just the four seasons either.

I enjoy it, although I don’t get to hear it often. It always seems to be “broke.” 😃

You know what they say…

If it ain’t Baroque, don’t fix it!

**Me too. I like baroque, very much. **
But I LOOOOVE Mozart and Beethoven.

I’m a go for baroque type of guy.

Its a shame they stopped writing music after that period 🙂

Baroque is indeed VERY nice, but I actually prefer earlier music, think Morely, Dowland, Byrd.

I’ve come to enjoy baroque through “Chatham Baroque”. They are based in Pittsburgh and give shows for children called “Peanut Butter and Jam Sessions”. I would love to go to their adult concerts but have not been able to yet. “Chatham Baroque” has several CDs out.

Q: Why is the music of that era Baroque?

A: 'Cause someone shot it with Pachelbel’s Canon.

Are we allowed to like classical, romantic, and baroque? 😉

Last December, I attended a choral society concert. The program consisted of the following:

Three motets (Schutz):
Ein Kind ist uns geboren
Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt
Hodie Christus natus est

Chorale: Zion hort die Wachter singen (Bach)

Motets (Sweelinck):
Angelus ad pastoires ait
Hodie, Christus natus est

Magnificat (Buxtehude)

Carol: Sleepers, wake!

Motet for double chorus: Angelus ad pastores ait (Scheidt)

Carol: Lo, how a rose

Motet for double chorus: Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Bach)

You would have loved it! 😃

I love Baroque! I’m listening to Handel right now, the Largo from *Xerxes–*very good meditation music…very sorrowful, but builds up to be very glorious and beautiful.

I have a whole CD of Baroque…Pachelbel, Handel, Bach…The Brandenberg Concertos are awesome!

I LOVE baroque! I couldn’t name any of the pieces or the composers, except for Vivaldi, but I find the music soothing and yet inspiring. In fact, when I was studying 8-16 hours a day last year (2nd year of pharmacy school), I would listen to AOL’s radio, tuned to the baroque channel. I credit it with helping me actually pass that year. :dancing:

Our choir did Handel’s “Ode on St. Cecilia’s Day” and Bach’s “Magnificat” will full baroque orchestra on St. Cecilia’s Day.

The dead shall live, the living die and music will resound the sky.

Last Saturday I played the second movement from Beethoven’s “Pathetique” Sonata before Mass, a Bach chorale from the Anna Magdelena Notebook after the Communion hymn, and I got mischievious and played Chopin prelude in C minor before Communion. I played them well and received rave reviews.

I guess that was out of line. One couple asked me after Mass if that was Brandy I was playing before Communion. 😃 I knew that would happen, but it never occurred to me that it might have been sinful until just now! 😛 They were all excited to hear how Barry Manilow used the first third of Chopin’s prelude for “Could it be Magic” intro. I showed them the music and we had a great parking lot discussion about the Mass and the priest, and their favorite hymns.

The week before that I talked my daughter into playing her violin with me for a Bach prelude after the Communion hymn. That went over very well.

Normally I don’t get to play that sort of stuff, but while the church (historical St. Anthony in Wichita) is being remodeled I get to play piano instead of pipe organ, so I’m sneaking in some of my favorite solos.

Beethoven is my all-time favorite. But I do enjoy Baroque.

All time favorite:
Moonlight Sonata
