I watched part of the MN mass from Rome. If he were to celebrate the TLM there would he be facing the same way. Also, I loved the five or six? candles on the front of the altar. I’ve never seen this before, reason?

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!!!

Yes. Papal Masses from the High Altar of the Confession of St. Peter’s Basilica have always been celebrated in that direction- that is, towards the east. The first Basilica was built with the rear apse oriented west, whereas most churches were oriented east, the new Basilica copied this orientation so the Masses were always said towards the nave (though do not make the mistake that this was purposefully done so the Mass could be said to the people- until medieval times the congregation would turn around and face the back of the nave, the idea of the entire Church praying to the East was so important).

There were seven candles on the High Altar at the Papal Mass. Normal Masses are to have six candles, while Masses celebrated by a Bishop have seven.

I have a question. In front of the altar, there is a round area. It has many gold urns?] in it. What are they?

Thanks Caesar! I’ve never seen that view before! Very interesting! Any significance to the number or diffrent heights of the lamps?

When was the pope in Minnesota?
That’s what I thought it meant at first too.

Guys…unless it’s a pretty commonly used abbreviation on the boards or in Church documents, please don’t use them. Still, it’s a good idea to write them out for at least the first post. MN means Minnesota- Midnight Mass is…well…“Midnight Mass.”
