Hello!

Today, I served during the Feast Day of Corpus Christi at a local Tridentine Mass. I was told I would one of two torchbearers, and this would be the first High Mass I served. I served with a very experienced acolyte, as well. However, instead of vesting in the simple cassock and surplice as usual, Father directed the torchbearers to wear black elbow length capes and to button them all ther way.

After a little research I have found it resembles the mozzetta, but I wasn’t sure. I didn’t get a chance to ask Father why he wanted it. I liked it though, it was warmer and also sharper.

But my questions are: Was this okay? Was this normal for a Corpus Christi Mass? Also, what is the cape called?

Thank you!

This may be a good starting place: wdtprs.com/blog/2008/07/quaeritur-small-shoulder-capes-on-altar-boys/

On those ocassions when I go the Dominican Rite Mass at Holy Rosary in Portland, Ore., I see that the Altar boys wear the black shoulder cape. It is definately very “sharp”.

I appreciate the replies!

I really wasn’t concerned if it was wrong Liturgical wear, but the Priest (Diocesan) rarely tries “new” things, and this was the first time he had used these that I know of, though I had seen them on the rack for months. He stated I resembled a Monsignor. I hope we wear them more often, but I doubt we will.

Anyway, thanks again!
