Altar server arrival

They should be more than vested and present, I would think. Where I’ve seen many servers, many of them hold candles if nothing else. Unless they’re very young.
In the parish where I was there were no other roles for the extra altar servers. You had a Cross bearer, two candle bearers and two who served at the altar. At least 8 or 9 had no 'server role".

As sacristan and senior altar server I set up for Adoration and the daily Mass (90 mins) arriving about 30 minutes before Adoration starts. It takes about 20 minutes to set up for Adoration (with Morning Office) and the Mass that follows.

If I am just serving at Mass and everything has already been set up, I find that 10 minutes is ample to check on details, discuss any issues with the priest and don the alb.

I think it depends on the occasion, too. If it’s just a normal Sunday Mass, I think being there 15 minutes prior to Mass is fine. If I know that the Mass I am serving is “bigger” than the average Sunday Mass, I try to arrive 30 minutes early so that I can have time to ask any questions I may have. I always try to make sure I get any questions answered so that there is no confusion when Mass begins.
