What does it mean to be an altar server?

What is your vocation, if you don’t mind me asking?I grew so much deeper in my faith from being an altar server for 7 years and it played a major role in bringing me to my vocation. It saddens me when I read about places where female altar servers are discouraged or not allowed, if I wasn’t one I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I’m guessing your vocation isn’t the priesthood.I grew so much deeper in my faith from being an altar server for 7 years and it played a major role in bringing me to my vocation. It saddens me when I read about places where female altar servers are discouraged or not allowed, if I wasn’t one I wouldn’t be where I am today.
How beautiful that your service at the altar helped you grown in faith and that God used it to bring you to where He was leading you. Your voice and your story will be important to share and I hope they are heard. I will remember you in my prayers. God bless you.I grew so much deeper in my faith from being an altar server for 7 years and it played a major role in bringing me to my vocation. How good it is when someone asks us to help! And you responded…thanks be to the Lord.I have to agree that being an altar server has deepened my faith and has caused me to be more involved in my church. I used to go to church every weekend and just sit in the pew, until someone asked me to be a server because they were needed. From that point on, I’ve become a reader, sacristan, member of the liturgy committee, and a cantor. I think that if I didn’t have a few years of altar serving, then I wouldn’t have been involved in any other group.

Well, good for you, but what’s wrong with pew sitting, especially if your talents lie more in the EF area (server, Latin, Gregorian chant schola, etc.) and there aren’t any?I have to agree that being an altar server has deepened my faith and has caused me to be more involved in my church. Our parish ministers like lectors, EMHCs, etc do not wear a robe covering of any kind. We are asked to wear modest yet decent clothing which does not include denim. The women in my parish tend to stay away from wearing a great deal of accessories. We are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes preferably not tennis shoes unless you have to wear them for health reasons. I personally wear a long dress or skirt most of the time with a few pieces of jewelry & a small hat & a scarf with black flat shoes of some type. Thanks for the link.
Keep in mind that the video is a training video specific to that parish. Other parishes don’t necessarily do things exactly as that parish does them.
For example, they start processing at the end of the first verse of the entrance hymn. My parish starts processing at the first words of the entrance hymn, when everyone starts singing. Neither is right or wrong.
Also notice the thurifer at about the four minute mark.

High heels and open toe shoes are unsafe on the steps. Red heels and bare legs are too provocative. Black or brown shoes with closed toes, black or brown hose/socks and/or pants are required. Bright colors anywhere - scarves, headbands, jewelry, shoes, are forbidden. The thurifier in the video would not be allowed to vest for Mass at my parish.
They also have a lay minister process in with the Book of the Gospel. In my parish, absent a deacon, the Book of the Gospel is placed in a stand on the Altar prior to Mass and it not included in the entrance procession.
Again, neither is right or wrong. I do have an opinion on what is better and like the way they have torch bearers for the reading of the Gospel. That is not possible in my parish because of the configuration of the sanctuary.
