Simple question: Do altar servers need to/ should pray the prayers of vesting that the priest and deacon say when they put on the same things e.g cincture and amice?

We were taught to say our own vesting prayers back in the 50s. They were listed on the inside of the locker where the cassocks were hung.

In my parish, servers and priests pray together just before Mass starts. In the Ordinariate, we use

I will go in unto the Altar of God.
R. Unto God, Who giveth joy to my youth.

V. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.
R. Who hath made heaven and earth.

Followed by the Opening Collect for Purity

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secretes are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy holy spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name: through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Maybe it’s me, but I’ve never seen a server wear an amice, and traditional server cassocks don’t require cinctures.

In my Parish Priests, Deacons Lectors & Servers pray together in the Sacristy before Mass.

It seems inappropriate to me that a lay person would recite prayers intended for use by the ordained.

Wow I wish my parish would have had a group prayer before the mass started. It seems to me that this would have been a good way to ask God to help us serve the Mass w/o distractions.

Find a good one, print it off and show if to your priest. You never know. 😉

In the EF these are already parts of the Mass (in Latin, of course).

I took the OP to mean prayers as one is actually vesting. I somewhat agree with those who think the prayers should be more specific to the articles put on.

For cassock and surplice, there are prayers that you can say when vest with them. Those prayers are alright for non-clergy to say. If the parish uses alb, I don’t see any issue with non-clerics saying the prayers for putting on the alb and cincture, as the prayers specified go with them and there are not distinct prayers for the alb for each minister.
