I served from about the age of 8 or so for many years and never had any difficulty in controlling the paten.Usually those communion patens are a “paten on a stick” which are difficult to control, especially for kids. A far better tool for the job is an actual paten held in one’s palm (or the lid to the ciborium) or even better a folded purificator in one’s palm that acts as a “mitt” of sorts should a host be dropped.
Why would you think it would be difficult to control?
As an aside, have you seen the way these kids today handle the remotes for their WI’s and X Box’s? ? If I didn’t have any trouble back in the mid fifties, I somehow doubt they will have trouble today, especially with the obvious manual dexterity that they have.
