altar servers

What year did we begin to have girls as altar servers? I really don’t remember and my husband who is a recent convert just asked me.

Many parishes had them illegally from the late seventies onward, but it was not until 1994 when the Pontifical Council for the Authentic Interpretation of Legal Texts said that altar girls were permissible, if a bishop allows it and a priest is willing to use them.
